The «WEEDKEND»

Llegada la fecha del 4/20, era un momento de celebración para la comunidad stoner, doom, sludge y demás variantes del rock y el metal, y con ocasión de tan memorable fecha (algunos entenderán porque y sino siempre se puede buscar 420 por internet) se presentaba un fin de semana que me dio por nombrar como “The Weedkend”.

When the date of 4/20 arrives,  it was a moment of celebration for the community stoner, doom, sludge and other variants of rock and metal, and with such a memorable date (internet is full information about the meaning of 420 ) the occasion was ideal for a special weekend that I would like to give the nickname of «The Weedkend».

Ante la imposibilidad de asistir al Roadburn por distintos motivos, no era mala opción concatenar 3 eventos en Polonia que podrían entrar dentro el abanico artístico de dicho festival.

Given the impossibility of attending the Roadburn for various reasons, it wasn’t a bad option to concatenate 3 events in Poland that could fit into the artistic range of the festival.

El viernes comenzaba con el festival Bongfest en las salas Hydrozagadka y Chmury, el sábado continuaba con el concierto de Sannhet y Sum Of R en Hydrozagadka nuevamente y finalmente con el mini festival Weedstock previsto en la sala Megaclub que tuvo que ser trasladado a la sala Red & Black en Chorzów por razones logísticas.

Friday began with the Bongfest festival at Hydrozagadka and Chmury clubs, on Saturday it continued with the concert of Sannhet and Sum Of R at Hydrozagadka again and finally with the mini Weedstock festival planned at Megaclub that had to be moved to the Red & Black Club in Chorzów for logistical reasons.

Siendo el viernes el citado 4/20, al concierto planeado de Talbot, Barren Womb y Jabba en Chmury se añadieron las actuaciones de Belzebong con Miist que dió lugar al Bongfest.

Being Friday the aforementioned 4/20, to the planned concert of Talbot, Barren Womb and Jabba in Chmury the performances of Belzebong with Miist were added that gave rise to the Bongfest.

Manteniendo la localización para los grupos, comenzaron los noruegos Jabba con una propuesta bastante aproximada a Torche pero limitada tanto en lo técnico como en el número de componentes del grupo. Interesante e intenso para comenzar.

Maintaining the location for the bands, the Norwegians Jabba started with a proposal that felt somehow like inspired by Torche but limited both in the technical aspect and in the number of components of the band. Interesting and intense to start.

Me llamó la atención que, a excepción del cuarteto que es Belzebong, todos los restante grupos eran dúos (algunos bajo y batería, otros guitarra y batería).

It surprised me that, except for the quartet that is Belzebong, all the remaining bands were duets (some bass and drums, others guitar and drums).

Buen y corto comienzo, tiempo de acercarse a Hydrozagadka para ver a los polacos Miist que contaba en sus filas con el batería que fue de Belzebong y que era, hasta hace poco tiempo, de Weedpecker.

Good and short start, time for Hydrozagadka to see the Polish band Miist who had in their ranks who was the drummer of Belzebong and, until recently, of Weedpecker.

Un dúo un poco mas ambiental, guitarra y batería, ocasionalmente con un teclado aportando unas pequeñas entradas en algún tema. Mas tranquilo que los otros dúos de Chmury pero seguramente mucho mas técnico. Interesante ver que nos proponen en futuras composiciones.

A duet a little more about the ambience and the trance of their songs, guitar and drums, occasionally with a keyboard providing some small environment. Calmer than the other duets of Chmury but surely much more technical. Interesting to see what they propose in future compositions.

En Chmury comenzaba sin dilación el concierto de los noruegos Barren Womb a los que había visto con anterioridad en el Alive de Wroclaw, una propuesta muy punk y mas radical que buscaba el contacto con el público y que en mi opinión fue muy bien recibida. El guitarra se metió entre el público, el batería hizo lo mismo en otro tema y así consiguieron poco a poco la complicidad de la audiencia.

In Chmury, quickly start the Norwegian band Barren Womb, which I had previously seen in the Alive club of Wroclaw, a very punk and more radical proposal that looked for contact with the public and which in my opinion was very well received. The guitar jump into the audience, the drummer did the same thing on another song and thus gradually achieved the complicity of the audience.

Mucho mejor concierto que en Wroclaw, probablemente la gente ayudó a ello.

Much better concert than in Wroclaw, probably people helped them.

Y momento para los reyes del Bong y el humo, los polacos Belzebong. Con su stoner doom y las máquinas de humo a pleno rendimiento, un concierto de Belzebong es siempre una fiesta. Siempre descargan sus temas con pasión y es, sin duda, uno de los grupos polacos que uno debe ver cuando tiene la oportunidad.

And time for the kings of the Bong and smoke, Belzebong. With its stoner doom and smoke machines at full capacity, a Belzebong concert is always a party. They always perform their songs with passion and it’s, without a doubt, one of the Polish bands that one should see when there is an opportunity.

Una vez más, no defraudaron y van…..

Once again, they didn’t disappoint and I saw them a few times…

 

Para terminar el viernes Talbot de Estonia con los que no terminé de conectar pero que también tocaron con un estilo un poco mas lento que Barren Womb y con una pegada mas doom. Seguramente el cansancio de la semana pudo conmigo.

To finish on Friday the Estonians Talbot who didn’t connect with me but who also played with a style a bit slower than Barren Womb and with a more doom punch. Surely the fatigue of the week finally arrive to a point when a time to rest was needed.

Al día siguiente, una asistencia un poco escasa deslució un concierto muy interesante, como suele ocurrir con los organizados por Deerhunter Booking a los que he tenido ocasión de asistir.

The next day, a very interesting concert (as often happens with those organized by Deerhunter Booking) hadn’t got a proper attendance. A pity. 

Lo abría la propuesta de Nowa Ziemia, con la propuesta solista de Artur Krychowiak. Una música muy ambiental y para escuchar con más detenimiento pero que incorporaba montones de matices tanto con su pedalera como con sus instrumentos.

It opened the concert by Nowa Ziemia, the solo proposal of Artur Krychowiak. A very environmental music and to listen more carefully but that incorporated lots of nuances with both his pedalboard and his instruments.

A continuación, Sum Of R nos dieron un sólido concierto en la que demostraron que tocando bajo y batería hay un abanico amplio de posibilidades. Desde la opresión que transmite Bell Witch a la energía y el filo pop de Royal Blood, pasando por matices muy curiosos como los que aportaron Sum Of R.

Next, Sum Of R gave us a solid concert in which they showed that playing bass and drums there is a wide range of possibilities. From the oppression that Bell Witch transmits to the energy and the rock pop vein of Royal Blood, passing through very curious nuances such as those contributed by Sum Of R.

Un concierto contundente y sorprendente al mismo tiempo.

A convincing and surprising concert at the same time.

Sannhet, provenientes de New York, nos mostraron otro metal, probablemente mas orientado al post rock pero también excelente.

Sannhet, from New York, showed us another metal, probably more oriented to post rock but also excellent.

Muy curioso me resulto el modelo de guitarra que llevaban y el batería, para mi gusto, fue el motor principal del grupo en su concierto. Increíble el ritmo que llevó todo el tiempo así como la contundencia de su pegada.

Very curious I found the guitar model that their guitarist used and their drummer, in my opinion, was the main engine of the band in their concert. Incredible the tempo that he manages to keep all the time as well as the forcefulness of his punch.

Y con eso daba por terminado la parte varsoviana del fin de semana y tocaba desplazarse en tren hasta el sur de Polonia, en concreto a la región de Silesia, para asistir al minifestival Weedstock.

And with that, it ended the weekend part in Warsaw and I traveled by train to the south of Poland, specifically to the Silesian region, to attend the Weedstock mini-festival.

Organizado por HappyDying Productions y Soulstone Gathering, eso significa sinónimo de calidad y el desbarre de poner en un festival a Weedeater, Weedpecker y a ellos unirles a Weedruid y Weedcraft me pareció una genial idea.

Organized by HappyDying Productions and Soulstone Gathering, that means synonymous of quality and just the idea of putting together Weedeater and Weedpecker, and them into a festival with Weedruid and Weedcraft. It seemed like a great idea.

La sala abría sus puertas a las 4:20 (no podía ser en otra hora) y el primer grupo en abrir las hostilidades eran los polacos Weedcraft.

The club opened its doors at 4:20 (it couldn’t be another time) and the first band to open fire were the Polish band Weedcraft.

Su primera canción me sonó como si estuviese viendo nuevamente a Belzebong, lo cual no es mala señal. Los siguientes temas ya sonaron un poco distintos aunque siguiendo el estilo doom stoner instrumental y que la verdad solo muy bien.

Their first song sounded to me like I was watching Belzebong again, which isn’t a bad sign. The following songs already sounded a bit different but following the doom stoner instrumental style and that fits just nice in the evening.

Una buena manera de comenzar el concierto.

A good way to start the concert.

Tras ellos era el momento de los alemanes Weedruid. Tuvieron curiosamente menos afluencia de público que los grupos anteriores y su música también siguió con un estilo parecido al anterior. No me llamaron especialmente la atención y se les vio menos sueltos en el escenario. Tal vez la responsabilidad de tocar delante de Weedeater y fuera de casa les intimidó, pero al fin y al cabo cumplieron con el papel.

After them was the time for the Germans Weedruid. They had curiously less crowd than the previous band and their music also continued with a style similar to the previous one. They didn’t especially catch my attention and they were seen less loose on stage. Maybe the responsibility of playing in front of Weedeater and away from home intimidated them, but after all, they fulfilled the role given.

Y llegaba uno de los platos fuertes de la tarde, Weedpecker. Para mi, uno de los grupos más increíbles que he descubierto en Polonia y que me transportan a otros mundos cuando oigo sus discos o presenció sus conciertos.

And there came one of the main dishes of the afternoon, Weedpecker. For me, one of the most incredible bands that I have discovered in Poland and that transport me to other worlds when I listen to their records or witness their concerts.

 

Esta vez, nuevamente fue así. Tras publicar su último disco III en la discográfica Stickman Records (la misma que Elder o King Buffalo,) su presentación en directo no deja de asombrarme. Consiguen trasladar las atmósferas y el viaje psicodélico de sus melodías en sus conciertos y las melodías vocales que interpretan los hermanos Wyro y Bartek tanto como los solos a las guitarras son increíbles.

This time, it was like that again. After releasing their last album III on the record label Stickman Records (the same as Elder or King Buffalo,) their live presentation doesn’t cease to amaze me. They manage to transfer the atmospheres and the psychedelic trip of their music in their concerts and the vocal melodies that the brothers Wyro and Bartek play as do so the solos from their guitars are incredible.

Tocando temas de sus 2 últimos discos en general y ademas rescatando algún tema de su primer disco, tuvieron que recortar su actuación debido a las limitaciones de tiempo (a las 10 de la noche debía terminar la música en directo al estar en una zona con viviendas).

Playing songs mainly from their last 2 albums and also rescuing some tracks from their first album, they had to cut their performance due to time constraints (at 10 o’clock at night the music had to end live due to the location of the club inside a populated area).

Así que me dejaron con las ganas de seguir oyendo sus temas en directo, espero resarcirme en breve.

So they left me with the desire to continue listening to their songs live, I hope to deal with that shortly.

Para finalizar el concierto, la presencia de Weedeater era el plato fuerte para seguramente todos los que asistíamos al mismo. Tocando God Luck And Good Speed, era el momento de flotar y dejarse llevar.

To conclude the concert, the presence of Weedeater was the main attraction for all of us who attended. Playing their album God Luck And Good Speed, it was time to float and let go.

Con una base rítmica formada por el icónico Dave “Dixie” Collins y con un nuevo batería Carlos Denogean (desde cuando los vi en el Roadburn Festival o en el Asymmetry Festival) estaban tan bien sincronizados que su guitarrista parecía estar a su rollo en el otro lado del escenario.

With a rhythmic base formed by the iconic Dave «Dixie» Collins and with a new drummer Carlos Denogean (than the one I saw playing with them some years ago in the Roadburn Festival or in the Asymmetry Festival) they were so well synchronized that their guitarist seemed to be on his own mood on the other side of the stage.

El concierto fue increíble por parte de Weedeater, la gente disfrutó de la experiencia Weedeater y todos salimos increíblemente satisfechos.

The concert was amazing by Weedeater, the people enjoyed the Weedeater experience and we were all incredibly satisfied.

Tener la ocasión de ver a Weedeater en esa sala compacta y tan bien gestionada la acústica desde la mesa de mezclas fue una delicia y los que no aprovecharon la ocasión deberían hacérselo mirar porque mereció y mucho la pena. Por ello, puedo considerar la actuación de Weedeater como la guinda a un verde pastel en forma de fin de semana musical.

Having the chance to see Weedeater in this small club and with the acoustics so well managed by the people at the mix desk was a delight and those who didn’t take the chance to attend, better think twice next time.  It was very much worth it. Therefore, I can consider Weedeater’s performance as the icing on a “green cake” in the form of a musical weekend.
