Soulstone Gathering 2018

A principios de noviembre me surgió la oportunidad de acercarme a Cracovia para asistir al festival Soulstone Gathering.

At the beginning of November I had the opportunity to be in Krakow and attend the Soulstone Gathering festival.

El viaje prometía ser corto con una combinación más o menos buena desde España llegando al aeropuerto de Cracovia, pero desgraciadamente no fui capaz de llegar a ver a los dos primeros grupos. Tenía la esperanza de llegar a ver a Black Salvation pero un desgraciado incidente con un conductor de edad avanzada y que no sabía lo que era un navegador en el móvil me llevo a prácticamente perderme por completo también su concierto.

The trip promised to be short with a more or less good combination from Spain arriving at the Krakow airport, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to arrive on time for the first two bands. I was hoping that I would arrive to see Black Salvation but an unfortunate incident with an elderly driver who didn’t know how a navigation app works led me to almost completely lose their concert as well.

 

 

Así que el primer grupo que tuvo tiempo de ver de una manera extensa fue a Palm Desert. 

So the first band that had time to see more extensively was to Palm Desert.

Muy inspirados en todo el movimiento Stoner del desierto, me resultó curioso que sus canciones tuviesen solos doblados hacer solos doblados al puro estilo Iron Maiden lo que le daba un toque distinto a sus canciones.

There was no doubt that their was inspired by the Stoner movement of the desert, I was surprised that on their songs the solos were dubbed in pure Iron Maiden style which gave a different touch to their songs.

Tras un tiempo de retirada, decidieron volver a la actividad hace unos meses y fue una suerte poder asistir a su concierto en el festival. 

After a short break in their activity, they decided to return to perform live not long ago and i was fortunate to be able to attend their concert at the festival.

 

 

Tras ellos llegaba un grupo que siempre he alabado en mis crónicas y que seguiré haciéndolo porque su música es superlativa, Weedpecker. 

After them came a band that I always praised in my articles and I will continue to do so because their music is superlative, Weedpecker.

En esta ocasión tuvieron un poco de mala suerte a nivel técnico por los fallos de los pedales de uno de los guitarristas, pero nada que no permitiese disfrutar de un magnífico concierto. Lo único que les supuso un verdadero problema fue que su actuación se vio acortada por el retraso que se fue acumulando en las anteriores actuaciones.

On this occasion they had a bit of bad luck on a technical level (some bad connections probably were the reason), but nothing that didn’t allow us to enjoy a magnificent concert. The only thing that gave them a real problem was that they had to cut their performance due to the delay from previous bands.

Empezaron haciendo una prueba de sonido que dio inicio a Liquid Sky sin transición alguna y a partir de allí fue un volar y volar en los pasajes musicales que dibujan los hermanos Dobry con sus guitarras.

They started doing a sound test that seamlessly flows into Liquid Sky and from there it was a flying musical trip leaded by the Dobry brothers with their guitars.

 

 

La última banda que tocó en el primer día fueron My Sleeping Karma. 

The last band that played on the first day were My Sleeping Karma.

Los alemanes fueron los encargados de cerrar la noche y se pudo ver que eran muy demandados por todo el público asistente. Música instrumental con un muy buen rollo entre los miembros de la banda. 

The Germans were in charge of closing the night and i would say that the club during their concert was fuller packed than next day. Instrumental music with a rally good vibe between the members of the band. 

Hicieron buena la denominación que recibió el primer día de festival. El Soulday se había acabado dejándome muy buenas sensaciones.

They made good the nickname that received the first day of festival. The Soulday had finished leaving me very good feelings.

 

 

Para el día siguiente, comenzamos el día acercándonos por el área del concierto a media mañana para ver la exposición de distintos tipos de artes que se completo con una actuación del grupo Andromeda Space Ritual. 

For the next day, it began the day taking a look to the concert area in the afternoon to see the exhibition of different types of arts that was completed with a performance by the Andromeda Space Ritual band.

Una muy buena iniciativa que ponía mas en relieve la experiencia que resulta este festival y cómo va creciendo desde esa primera edición a la que tuve la suerte de asistir y hacer su correspondiente crónica.

A very good initiative that put more value the experience that is this festival and as it grows from this first edition which I was lucky to attend and to describe.

Soulstone Gathering

 

El denominado Stoneday prometía mucho, tanto por la cantidad como por la calidad de las bandas que se daban cita en el mismo.

The so-called Stoneday promised a lot, both for the quantity and the quality of the bands that take part.

Comenzando por los franceses The Necromancers que nos sorprendieron con una propuesta muy inspirada por Electric Wizard y que me parecieron una excelente elección por parte del organizador.

The first band were The Necromancers that surprised us with a proposal very inspired by Electric Wizard and that seemed to me an excellent choice by the organizer.

Prueba de ello es que el día siguiente incitaron una gira conjunta con los polacos Belzebong por Europa.

Proof of this is that the following day they start a joint tour with Belzebong through Europe.

 

Tras ellos, tiempo para Spaceslug. Una banda polaca que con cada nueva entrega va creciendo un poco mas. Desde la primera vez que los vi en el Alive de Wroclaw la banda va siendo cada vez más intensa y está más rodada. 

After them, time for Spaceslug. A Polish band that with each new record is growing a little more. From the first time I saw them in the Alive of Wroclaw the band is getting more intense and more compact.

Siempre me ha llamado la atención su combinación de vocalistas participando batería y bajista con las voces más suaves y las más agresivas por parte de su guitarrista. Banda a seguir la pista si YOB y propuestas similares son del agrado de quien nos lee.

I have always been struck by their combination of the softer vocals by the drummer and the bassist with the more aggressive vocals by their guitarist. Band to follow if YOB and other similar proposals feels tasty for you.

 

A continuación era el momento de Sunnata que seguía explorando esa música doom a la que hacía referencia antes. Pero, en su caso, hay mucho más que doom en su propuesta. La psicodelia e incluso la música trance puede llegar a ser una referencia evidente, puesto que sus temas nos llevan como parte de un viaje a lo largo de los 5 que interpretaron.

Then it was the time of Sunnata who were exploring that doom music I was referring before. But, in their case, I will say that there is much more than doom. Psychedelia and even trance music can become a reference, since many of their songs take us as part of a journey through the 5 that they played.

Otra banda que sigue avanzando a pasos de gigante en su progresión y tanto Sunnata como Spaceslug ya están saliendo a dar conciertos por Europa frecuentemente, con lo que pueden pasar cerca de tu casa en breve.

Another band that continues advancing in their progression and both Sunnata and Spaceslug are already going out and performing concerts in Europe frequently, something that could happen near your house shortly.

 

 

Momento para los fineses Dark Buddha Rising que trajeron un punto más de oscuridad del que ya nos había aportado Sunnata y eso se noto tanto en su música como en su propuesta escénica.

Moment for the Finns Dark Buddha Rising that brought us an extra dose of darkness that Sunnata had already given us and that was noticeable both in their music and in their stage proposal.

Asombrosa resultaba la pedalera que tenia a su disposición el guitarrista y fue todo una experiencia como los anteriores. De lo que pude hablar con otra gente, fue uno de los conciertos que mas gustaron ese día.

Amazing was the pedalboard that the guitarist had at his disposal and it was all an innmersive experience like with the previous bands. From what I could talk to other people, it was one of the hits of the day.

 

Y antes de llegar al plato fuerte de la jornada, los alemanes Wiegedood nos aplastaron con su propuesta de Black Metal y que atacaron de manera inmisericorde.

And before the main course of the day, the Germans Wiegedood crushed us with their proposal of Black Metal and attacked mercilessly.

Una gran demostración por parte de YOB que el llevar una banda así delante de ellos no les daba ningún reparo al ponerles el listón alto en lo que se refiere a intensidad musical.

A great demonstration by YOB that sharing the tour with a band like this didn’t frighten them. Wiegedood were able to set the bar quite high regarding to musical intensity.

 

 

Pero la estrella de la noche eran, obviamente los increíbles YOB.

But the star of the night were, obviously the almighty YOB.

Tras la intensa experiencia al filo de la muerte vivida por su carismático líder MIke Scheidt, resultaba reconfortante verle tan lleno de energía y dando esos guitarrazos que tanto nos cautivan. Bien secundado por sus fieles escuderos Aaron Riesenberg al bajo y Travis Foster a la batería, su repertorio hizo un recorrido por algunos de sus discos.

After the intense experience on the edge of death lived by their charismatic leader MIke Scheidt, it was comforting to see him so full of energy and performing those riffs that captivate us so much. Well seconded by his faithful squires Aaron Riesenberg on bass and Travis Foster on drums, their repertoire picked songs from 5 different records.

Comenzando con sus 2 primeros temas del ultimo disco (Ablaze y The Screen) volvieron atrás con Ball Of Molten Head y The Lie That Is Sin.

Beginning with their first 2 songs from the last album (Ablaze and The Screen) they went back  later with Ball Of Molten Head (one favourite) and The Lie That Is Sin.

El momento mas emotivo para mi fue cuando interpretaron Our Raw Heart de su ultimo disco. Un épico tema de prácticamente 15 minutos que transcurre por unos pasajes más melancólicos. Claramente una canción que recoge parte de esa difícil experiencia vital. 

The most emotional moment for me was when they performed Our Raw Heart from their last album. An epic composition of almost 15 minutes that keeps a more melancholic vibe during the song. Clearly the song is connected with this challenging experience that I referred before.

Tras esta, momento para Grasping Air en la que colaboro el cantante de Wiegedood hasta caer por los suelos al final del tema (literalmente) y cerrar el concierto con Adrift In The Ocean, lo que dejo fuera para esa noche mi favorita Quantum Mystic (espero que en otra ocasión pueda volver a verla en directo, no puedo olvidar la vez que la interpretaron en el Roadburn del 2014)

After this, time for Grasping Air in which take part the singer of Wiegedood until falling to the ground at the end of the song (literally) and closing the concert with Adrift In The Ocean, which left out for that night my favorite Quantum Mystic (I hope that on another occasion I can see it live again, it’s glued to my memory the time they played it at Roadburn in 2014)

 

Tras ellos era el momento de Fuoco Fatuo y pese a que tenia ganas de ver todas las propuestas del día, se me empezó a hacer un poco largo el día y decidí retirarme en ese momento.

After them was the time of the Italians Fuoco Fatuo and although I had wanted to see all the proposals of the day, I began to feel quite exhausted after the long day and decided to retire at that time.

De estas líneas solo me queda agradecer a toda la gente que organiza el festival y, en especial a Jacek, por la increíble labor que organizaron durante todo el fin de semana. Un 10 en la hospitalidad, en la calidad del sonido durante todas las actuaciones, en la selección en los grupos y en la fantástica decoración que realizaron en la sala dándole un clima especial.

From these lines I can only thank all the people who organised the festival and for the incredible work they did throughout the weekend and also, a special mention to their alma mater Jacek. 10 out of 10 in hospitality, the quality sound in all performances, great selection in the bands and the fantastic decoration at the club the gave that special atmosphere.

Un lugar con un ambiente muy especial y al que espero volver en el futuro. Nos vemos en el Soulstone Gathering 2019!!!
