Llegado el mes de Febrero y tras algunas escuchas del nuevo disco de Rival Sons llamado Feral Roots, se despejaron todas las dudas y tomamos la decisión de ir a verlos tocar las nuevas canciones en directo.
February arrived and after listening the new album of Rival Sons called Feral Roots, all my doubts were cleared. We decided to go see them in concert and check if the new songs are even better live.
Una vez estudiado donde había opción de desplazarse, dado que la gira no venía en este caso por la geografía española decidí que lo mejor era hacer una pequeña excursión por el suroeste de Francia para verlos actuar en La Rochelle.
Once we checked where there was an option to travel, given that the tour didn’t’t come this time to Spain, I decided that our best shot was to take a short trip to the southwest of France and see them perform in La Rochelle.
La Sirene
Así que llegado el fin de semana, era hora de coger los bártulos y viajar en coche a la zona.
So, when weekend arrives, it was time to pack our stuff and travel by car to the area.
Tras disfrutar de Burdeos, el domingo tocaba desplazarse hasta La Rochelle. Una bella ciudad junto al mar con mucha historia y una magnifica sala llamada «La Sirene».
After enjoying Bordeaux, on Sunday it was time to travel to La Rochelle. A beautiful city by the sea with a lot of history and a magnificent club called «La Sirene».
Y los encargados de abrir la velada fueron los canadienses The Sheepdogs a los que llegamos ya empezado su repertorio puesto que los controles exhaustivos de seguridad no nos permitieron entrar antes.
And the band who take the duties of opening the evening were The Sheepdogs to whom we arrived at their second or third song since the exhaustive security controls didn’t allow us to enter on time.

Y cuando su canción «Who?»sonaba ya vimos que el sonido era magnifico en la sala, cosa que se mantuvo durante toda la velada.
And when we went inside they were playing the song «Who?» we could confirm the good decision. The sound was magnificent in the hall concert and it was throughout the evening.
Otra cosa se puede decir de la entrega del público durante los conciertos pues fue muy fría y poco efusiva, supongo que será parte del carácter francés. Algunos asistentes al lado nuestro más parecían estar castigados que disfrutando.
Another thing can be said about the audience reaction during the concerts because it was very cold and not very effusive, I suppose it will be part of the French character. Some attendees on our side seemed more punished than enjoying themselves this amazing concert.
El concierto de The Sheepdogs fue magnífico como ya lo fue hace unos meses en Hondarribia y su setlist fue cubriendo fundamentalmente temas de sus últimos discos. Es un grupo que me ha ido enamorando y que seguramente me acerque un poco más a esos sonidos denominados “Americana”.
The concert of The Sheepdogs was excellent as it was a few months ago in Hondarribia but obviously quite shorter and their setlist was covering fundamentally songs of their last albums. It’s a band that I felt in love with and they are making that now I’m probably closer to those sounds called «Americana».
Una banda que merece mucho la pena ver, tanto por sus melodías como por la calidad vocal e instrumental de sus integrantes.
A band that is worth seeing, both for their melodies and the vocal and instrumental quality of their members.

Una gozada de comienzo que nos preparaba para el plato fuerte que eran uno de los grupos venerados por nuestro compañero Dr. Pretorius, los estadounidenses Rival Sons.
A joy to begin that prepared us for the main course that were one of the band devoutly venerated by our colleague Dr. Pretorius, the Americans Rival Sons.
A lo largo de más de hora y media nos deleitaron con esa mezcla de Hard Rock clásico con los efluvios de Led Zeppelin y The Doors impregnando la noche.
Throughout more than 90 minutes we were delighted with that mix of classic Hard Rock with the effluvia of Led Zeppelin and The Doors permeating the night.
Con mucha parte del concierto centrada en su fantástico nuevo álbum Feral Roots, tuvimos ocasión de observar no menos de 10 guitarras de Scott Holiday cada cual más apabullante que la anterior y también hubo ocasión de ver tocar la guitarra acústica a Jay Buchanan en un par de temas.
With much of the concert focused on their fantastic new album Feral Roots, we had the chance to watch no less than 10 guitars that Scott Holiday bring with him on this tour (Gretsch, Gibson, Fender and other that I wasn’t able to recognise) each more overwhelming than the last and there was also a chance to see their singer Jay Buchanan in a couple of themes playing the acoustic guitar.

Tuvieron momentos muy emotivos como la interpretación de “Jordan” con su cantante Jay arrodillado en el suelo transmitiendo una de manera brutal durante toda la canción.
They had very emotional moments like the interpretation of «Jordan» with their singer Jay kneeling on the floor transmitting flawlessly throughout the song.
También la interpretación de “Feral Roots” en la que Scott se armó con una Gibson SG de doble mástil y Jay con la acústica también puso lo suyo. Y a nivel personal, “Look Away” es uno de los temas que más me gustan de su nuevo álbum y tuvimos la suerte de escuchar una interpretación magistral del mismo.
Also the interpretation of «Feral Roots» in which Scott used a double-mast Gibson SG and Jay with an acoustic was a hit. And on a personal level, «Look Away» is one of the song that I like most from their new album and we were lucky to hear a masterful interpretation of it.
La escenografía era muy discreta con un simple telón con la portada de su último disco pero bien acompañada por unos juegos de luces muy potentes que hacían más relevante todo la música que interpretaban.
The scenography was very discreet with a simple curtain with the cover of their last album but well accompanied by a set of very well thought lights that made all the music they played more relevant.

Tras haber visto a Rival Sons en varias ocasiones, debo decir que el momento actual de forma de la banda es espectacular. En esta ocasión debo destacar que Jay estuvo excepcional a nivel vocal con un timbre de voz espectacular durante todo el concierto.
Having seen Rival Sons on several occasions, I must say that the current moment of the band’s form is spectacular. On this occasion I must emphasize that Jay was exceptional at the vocal level with a flawless voice during the whole concert.
Solo me queda recomendar a mis colegas polacos no perder la ocasión de ver su concierto el 22 de Noviembre en la sala Stodola de Varsovia puesto que el concierto croe que merece la pena.
I can only recommend to my Polish colleagues not miss the opportunity to see their concert on November 22 in the Stodola Club in Warsaw because I think is worth every penny.
