Red Smoke Festival

El festival se realiza en la localidad de Pleszew en El Centro de Polonia y a unas 2:30 en coche desde Varsovia y unas 2 horas desde Poznań. 

The festival is held in the town of Pleszew in the center of Poland and about 2:30 by car from Warsaw and about 2 hours from Poznań.

La localización es bastante peculiar puesto que se realiza en un pequeño anfiteatro junto a un parque acuático y las piscinas y campos de fútbol de la localidad. 

The place is quite peculiar due to the fact that it’s located in a small amphitheater next to a water park and the local swimming pools and soccer fields.

Así que una vez situados, nos centramos en lo musical. 

So once we know where we stay, we are ready to rock and let’s focus on the musical matters.

El Primer día comenzaban los conciertos el grupo de los organizadores Red Scalp, que con su mezcla de stoner rock y hard rock. Una mezcla que no desmereció con muchas de las bandas más grandes y que de hecho tuvo tanta o más audiencia que los cabezas de cartel. 

The first day of the festival began with the band from the organisers: Red Scalp. They brought to us their mixture of stoner rock and hard rock. A mix that match the level of the bigger bands and even they had as much or more audience than some of the headliners.

Un grupo a destacar en Polonia y de los que espero ya fervientemente su segundo disco.

A band that will stand out in Poland and I’m already excited about what they bring us in their second album, which they just finished recording.

Tras una hora de concierto era el momento de Re-Stoned desde Rusia

After an hour of concert it was time for Re-Stoned from Russia.

Stoner instrumental al estilo de Yawning Man pero a los que a mi entender les falta un poco de fuerza y movimiento en el escenario. El público estaba animado pero el grupo no consiguió que se mantuviese esa dinámica. 

Stoner instrumental in the style of Yawning Man but, in my opinion, they lack some strength and dynamic on stage. The crowd was excited after Red Scalp but the group didn’t manage to keep that momentum going.

Tras ellos era el turno de los israelíes Ouzo Bazooka y al salir al escenario, un problema técnico apareció con la electricidad y demoro el concierto en más de 2 horas y medias.

After them it was the turn of the Israelis Ouzo Bazooka and, when they appear on stage, a technical problem with electricity happened and the concert was delayed more than 2 hours.

Debo de decir que pese a la magnitud del retraso, la gentes se comportó razonablemente bien (tal vez al ser un festival stoner doom, no había tanto “alterado” como en otras ocasiones). 

I must say that, despite the magnitude of the delay, the people behaved reasonably well (perhaps being a stoner doom festival, manage to keep the audience in a mellow mood).

Así que tras la larga espera, aparecieron en escena y el festival se convirtió en un hervidero. Gente bailando, el grupo super implicado con el concierto y en hacer todo una fiesta

So after the long wait, they appeared on the scene and the festival became a big party. People dancing, the band heavily involved with the concert and making that the delay was worth.

Música rock con mucho pop y muchas raíces étnicas que llegó al público por completo. 

Rock music with a lot of pop and many ethnic roots that reached the public heart.

Tras un rápido cambio era el momento de Sasquatch y una apuesta 100% stoner. Entrega al máximo también por su parte con una propuesta mucho más directa que la de los anteriores y tal vez un sonido muy saturado o alto del bajista. 

After a quick change in the backline it was time for Sasquatch  Giving all they have with their pure stoner proposal, probably more direct than the previous bands. From my point of view, the bass guitar sound was a bit oversaturated, maybe that’s required when you play a Rickenbaker bass on the proper Lemmy Style.

Tal vez eran como lo quería el grupo pero en parte se comía las partes vocales y el sonido de la guitarra.

Maybe this sound was as the band wanted but partly hide the vocal parts and the sound of the guitar. Nothing to complain, pure attitude and energy.

Para finalizar el primer día quedaba el plato fuerte: los alemanes Kadavar. 

And to finish this first day, we got the main dish: the Germans Kadavar.

Tal vez no sean el grupo más innovador del mundo (de hecho su propuesta de basa en un revival de épocas anteriores, incluso en su propio aspecto) pero dan un buen espectáculo en directo. 

They may not be the most innovative band in the world (in fact their proposal builds on a revival of older times, even in their visual aspect and their dress code) but they give a really good show.

Pese a ser solo 3 componentes, se bastan y se sobran para llenar el escenario. Con sus melenas al viento y las melodías que nos rememoran viejos grupos clásicos.

Despite being only 3 members, they manage to fill the stage completely. With some ventilators shaking their long hairs and the melodies that remind us these old bands, we felt the mood coming into us.

Así terminaba un primer día más que prometedor y tocaba descansar para El Segundo día que pasaría a ser antológico. 

And with them ended a first day more than promising and I tried to get some rest for the Second Day that would become anthological.

Y esto es debido a que cada propuesta era tan diferente a la siguiente como interesante al mismo tiempo.

And this was because each proposal was as different from the next as interesting.

Para empezar, era el turno de los polacos de Mentor, que comenzaban con su mezcla de Hardcore, Metal y Punk bien mezclado en la coctelera. 

The open slot for the second day was for the polish band Mentor with their mix of Hardcore, Metal and Punk (mixed, not shaked).

Para mí fue el concierto más contundente de todo el festival (al menos, en lo referente a velocidad de la música) . La apuesta más dura pero al mismo tiempo cargada de melodía. 

For me it was the fastest concert of the festival (at least, in terms of music). A musical bet with a harder influence but at the same time plenty of melody.

Tuvieron una gran acogida por parte del público y poco después tuve la oportunidad de charlar con Artur Rumisnki, guitarrista de este y otros grupos y que espero tener lista en breve.

They had a great reception from the audience and shortly after I had the opportunity to chat with Artur Ruminski, their guitarist and the guitarist in many other bands.  (The interview will be online in a few days).

Los siguientes en tocar fueron King Buffalo ya que Bone Man tuvieron un problema con su furgoneta y se quedaron cerca de la frontera de Alemania con Polonia. 

The next to play were King Buffalo as Bone Man had a problem with their van and got trapped near the German border with Poland.

Un cambio de 180 grados con la psicodelia y el rock tomando protagonismo en su propuesta. Viniendo de gira con Elder, podíamos esperar una propuesta similar a ellos y en parte así fue pero mostrando sus señas de identidad claramente.

A 180 degree change with psychedelia and rock mainly in their proposal. Coming on tour with Elder, we could expect a proposal similar to them and in part this was but showing their identity clearly.

Debo de decir que su propuesta musical me encanto y que me apasionó en directo. Grupo a seguir en el futuro.

I must say that their musical proposal catch me and I was delighted about their live performance. Group to follow in the future.

Tras ellos, momento para Maida Vale desde Suecia y nuevo giro de tuerca de la organización con un grupo de rock que bebe de los clásicos pero integrado solo por mujeres. Esto para mí no tiene ninguna importancia, siempre que ese no sea su único valor. 

After them, moment for Maida Vale from Sweden and new surprise from the festival with a rock group that drinks from the classics but integrated only by women. This does not matter to me, as long as that is not their only value.

Pero no era sus caso, venían a demostrar que ellas estaban allí por méritos propios y esos eran méritos musicales. Sobre todo a destacar la energía de la vocalista y el carisma y seguridad de la guitarrista, como si llevase haciéndolo 20 o 30 años. 

But it was not their case, they came to prove that they were only because their musical merits. Especially to highlight the energy of the vocalist and the charisma and security of the guitarist, as if it had been doing this for 20 or 30 years.

Nos dejaron muy sorprendidos y de nuevo quedaba otro grupo para seguir en el futuro. 

They left us very surprised and again there was another group to continue in the future.

No se acababan ahí las sorpresas porque llegaba el momento de la propuesta más dura a nivel sonoro y de ataque directo al cerebro.

Surprises didn’t finish yet because the time came for the hardest proposal regarding sound level and direct attack to the brain.

Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard, con ese nombre cabría pensar que se le pasaba por la cabeza al llamarse así. Pero es que después de ver al grupo en directo debo de decir que el nombre encaja con su música. 

Mammoth Weed Wizard Bastard, with that name we might think what they were thinking to call themselves like that. But is that after seeing the band live that everything was clear.

Un Mamut hasta arriba de Marihuana hijo Bastardo de Electric Wizard. Esa sería mi definición de ellos. Una apisonadora sónica con todas las letras. 

A Mammoth full of Weed and a Bastard son of Electric Wizard. That would be my definition of them. A sonic roller devastating the stage.

Otra sorpresa y otro nombre a apuntar. 4 de 4 a esas alturas. 

Another surprise and another name to not. 4 of 4 at that time.

Pero es que tras ellos llegaron los italianos Giobia y nos volvieron la cabeza del revés con su psicodelia!!!

But it is that after them came the Italians Giobia and their turned our heads upside down with their psychedelia !!!

Inspirados por sus compatriotas Goblin sin lugar a duda y con reminiscencias de otros muchos grupos psicodélicos que sería largo de enumerar nos enamoraron con su propuesta. 

Inspired by their national fellows Goblin without a doubt and reminiscent of many other psychedelic groups that would be long to list, we fell in love with their proposal.

Un punto negativo fue que las voces no llegaron a apreciarse del todo, pero en lo referente a la atmósfera musical fue completamente inmersiva. 

A negative point was that the voices didn’t manage to outstand in the mix, but in terms of the musical atmosphere was completely immersive.

Llegábamos al final de la velada con el grupo al que más ganas tenía de ver en el festival y que me dejo un regusto amargo. 

We arrived at the end of the evening with the group that I most wanted to see at the festival and they left a bitter aftertaste.

Elder son una banda increíble con una técnica increíble y unas canciones impresionantes. 

Elder is an amazing band with incredible technique and awesome songs.

El comienzo con el tema Sanctuary de su último disco ya me puso la piel de gallina y, al comienzo, todo parecía escucharse muy bien. Una vez había avanzado el concierto comencé a apreciar que la voz del cantante no estaba del todo acertada con los tonos de la canción.

The beginning with the Sanctuary song of their latest album already gave me goosebumps and everything seemed to be heard very well. Once the concert progressed I began to appreciate that the singer’s voice was not quite right with the tones of the songs.

Todo no debe ser ideal como en el disco pero parece que en esta ocasión perdió parte de es melodía por el camino. Una pena porque instrumentalmente fue sublime. 

Everything should not be ideal as on the record but it seems that this time he lost part of the melody along the way. A pity because instrumentally the concert was sublime.

Así terminaba uno de los mejores días que he presenciado en un festival últimamente, al menos en lo referente a encajes con mis gustos musicales. 

Thus ended one of the best days I’ve seen in a festival lately, at least in terms of what match with my musical tastes.

Señores de Red Smoke, les debo una reverencia.

El domingo y ultimo día del festival comenzaba con el cambio de orden en las actuaciones de Stonehenge y Operators. 

The Sunday and the last day of the festival began with the change of order in the performances of Stonehenge and Operators.

Ambos grupos provenientes de Alemania y creo que incluso fue más acertado ese orden.

Both groups came from Germany and I think even that order was more successful.

Stonehenge practica un stoner con muchas influencias del jazz y con un desarrollo de las canciones en gran parte instrumental lo que hacia que sus canciones precisasen del uso de los asientos del anfiteatro para un comienzo de tarde mas relajado.

Stonehenge practices a stoner with many influences of the jazz and with a development of the songs largely instrumental what made their songs require the use of the seats at the amphitheater for a more relaxed beginning of the afternoon.

No consiguieron una gran atención del publico que se había acercado a esa hora al festival pero si que se podia apreciar que su música aportaba una ambientación distinta al concierto.

They didn’t get a lot of attention from the audience that had approached the festival at that time, but it was possible to see that their music contributed a different atmosphere to the concert.

La actuación de Operators fue mucho mas festiva y levanto de sus asientos a  la audiencia y comenzó a calentar a la gente.

The performance of Operators was much more festive and raised from their seats the audience and began to warm us.

Con inspiración de Deep Purple y con una vertiente muy rock, animaron desde el primer momento. 

With lot of inspiration from Deep Purple, they were all passion from the first moment.

A eso ayudo un frontman con carácter y carisma que entretuvo de manera excelente al publico.

To that  help a frontman with character and charisma that entertained us in an excellent way.

Tras ello, los italianos Lee Van Cleef me dejaron un poco fríos. Los problemas técnicos que sufrieron en su guitarra durante su actuación (incluso les obligo a parar durante 10 minutos) no ayudaron a la dinámica del concierto.

After that, the Italians Lee Van Cleef made me a bit cold. The technical problems that they suffered in their guitar during the performance (I even forced them to stop for 10 minutes) did not help the dynamics of the concert.

Su música instrumental no llego a conectar conmigo y tal vez fue mi percepción del concierto. En cualquier caso, ellos intentaron que la gente lo pasase bien y creo que eso lo lograron, puesto que no aprecie queja del publico a su actuación.

Their instrumental music didn’t connect with me and maybe it was my perception of the concert. In any case, they tried to give people a good time and I think that they did it, since there wasn’t complaint about their performance by the audience.

Tal vez en un tiempo nos sorprendan como sus compatriotas Giobia, hasta entonces esperaremos su evolución.

Perhaps at one time they will surprise us like their compatriots Giobia, until then we will wait for their evolution.

Y llegaba el momento de uno de los grupos que mas impresionados me dejaron en el festival (y ya eran unos cuantos los que lo hacían), Los Australianos Child nos presentaron su combinación de rock, blues y hard rock con la que nos dejaron impresionados.

And the time came for one of the groups that more impressed me at the festival (and there were already a few who did), Australians Child presented us their combination of rock, blues and hard rock.

Una apuesta increíble que combinaba la capacidad de emocionar vocalmente del cantante y guitarrista así como lo hacían sus solos y melodías y la contundencia de la base rítmica ( en especial de su batería que en muchos momentos me recordaba a Taylor Hawkins).

An incredible bet that combined the singer’s and guitarist’s vocal ability to excite as well as his solos and melodies and the forcefulness of the rhythm base (especially their drummer that somehow reminded me Taylor Hawkins).

Fue una autentica gozada de concierto.

It was an authentic enjoyment of concert.

Y tras ellos, llegaban los estadounidenses Egypt con un heavy doom rocoso y bebiendo de clásicos como Yob, Trouble, Pentagram o Blue Cheer.

So, it was time for the Americans Egypt with a heavy doom that drinks from classics like Yob, Trouble, Pentagram or Blue Cheer.

Muy compactos y sonando como una apisonadora, pavimentaron el camino para que llegase a continuación el cierre del festival con Acid King.

Very compact and sounding like a roller, paved the way for the festival to close with Acid King.

Con unas luces tenues y un sonido abrumador, Acid King decidieron demostrar que en lo que se refiere al Doom con todas sus letras, ellos están dispuesto a reivindicar su papel dentro de la historia del genero.

With a few dim lights and an overwhelming sound, Acid King decided to show that as far as the Doom is concerned, they are willing to claim their role within the history of the genre.

Es seguro que están en condiciones de ser recordados como uno de los grandes del genero. Su concierto del Red Smoke Festival así lo confirmó.

They are sure to be able to be remembered as one of the greats of the genre. Their concert at the Red Smoke Festival confirmed this.

Sonido como una roca, los riffs que hacían temblar las piernas y el percutir de la batería acompañado de un bajo demoledor hicieron el resto para confirmarlo. La guinda del pastel era la voz rasgada de su vocalista para terminar de una manera fantástica un festival que me ha dejado completamente extasiado y con ansiedad por saber que nos depara su próxima edición.

Sound like a rock, the riffs that made the legs tremble and the drums kicking accompanied by a solid bass guitar did the rest to confirm it. The icing on the cake was the torn voice of their vocalist to finish in a fantastic way a festival that has left me completely ecstatic and anxious to know that they will prepare us on the next edition.
