OFF FESTIVAL 2015. 1/3

Tras la buena experiencia del año pasado y coincidiendo con el 10 aniversario del festival, era una ocasión única para asistir al escaparate de nuevas tendencias musicales que supone el OFF Festival en Katowice, Polonia.

After the good experience from last year and with the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the festival, it was a unique opportunity to attend the showcase of new musical trends which represents the OFF Festival in Katowice, Poland.

En esta ocasión, el festival se celebró en el segundo fin de semana de Agosto durante el cual nos visitó una ola de calor con unas temperaturas muy elevadas lo que provocaron algunas circunstancias especiales que comentaremos mas adelante.

On this occasion, the festival was held on the second weekend of August during which we have been suffering a heat wave with very high temperatures which caused some special circumstances  that I will comment later on.

Así que, 3 días de festival nos esperaban y llegaba el momento de recoger la pulsera como en cualquier otro de los muchos festivales que se celebran cada verano por Europa. En todas las ocasiones que he estado, nunca he tenido problemas ni retrasos para acceder y así fue este año también. Supongo que se debe a la llegada escalonada de la gente y a la asistencia al mismo.

So, 3 days of festival were waiting for us and it was time to pick up the bracelet as on many festivals that are held every summer in Europe. On all occasions I’ve been, I’ve never had any problems or delays at the entrance and this year was the same case too. I guess it is due to the progressive arrival of people and the attendance to the festival.

Tras pasar el control de seguridad, atravesábamos una puerta de bienvenida y una vez dentro, nos encontramos con amplias zonas verdes donde se encuentran los escenarios rodeadas por calles y aceras que permiten el desplazamiento por el festival de manera muy cómoda.

After passing through security, we go through a welcome door and once inside, we find large green areas where the stage are mounted and surrounded by streets and sidewalks that allow the movement through the festival very comfortably.

Con las altas temperaturas, la organización permitió a los asistentes introducir una botella de agua del exterior y en el interior colocó unos bidones de agua potable para rellenar las botellas. Esto se merece el comentarlo porque la norma general en otros festivales es que no te dejen introducir agua y que solo este disponible en el interior previo pago. Un 10 para la organización en este aspecto.

With the high temperatures of the heat wave, the organization allowed attendees bring a bottle of water from outside and inside the festival they placed a few tanks of drinking water to fill the bottles. It deserve to be mentioned because the general rule is that other festivals will not let you enter any water and in the inside only possible to buy. So big applause for the organization in this matter.

También, como en otras ocasiones, los bomberos creaban cortinas de agua para refrescar a la gente. A más de uno vi empaparse por completo bajo la lluvia artificial.

Also, as in other editions, firefighters created curtains of water to cool the people. I saw more than one soaked completely under this artificial rain.

Como siempre en los festivales en Polonia (por motivos legales respecto al alcohol, según parece) la zona gastronómica y de bebidas estaba vallada y controlada por la seguridad del evento para evitar que se saliese de la misma con artículos no permitidos (fundamentalmente, alcohol).

As always at festivals in Poland (for legal reasons regarding alcohol, it seems) the culinary and beverage area was fenced and monitored by event security to avoid come out from it with not allowed items (mainly alcohol).

Sin embargo, en esta ocasión había un par de recintos cerrados desde los que era posible ver los conciertos de los 2 escenarios principales con una bebida. Te podías sentir un poco enjaulado pero al menos es una solución dentro de la legalidad.

However, this time there were a couple of closed areas from which it was possible to see the concerts of the 2 main stages with a drink. You could feel a little caged but at least it’s a solution within the law.

Comenzando ya con lo estrictamente musical, es necesario hacer notar que el festival tiene dos escenarios que programan contenido de manera simultánea pero lo suficientemente alejados para no interferir acústicamente.

Starting already with the musical matters, it must be signalized that the festival has always two stages that get concerts simultaneously but far enough to avoid acoustic disturbance between the scenes.

En total, 4 escenarios (Main, Lesna, Trojka y Eksperymentalna) junto con uno móvil (novedad este año) y una carpa dentro de la zona gastronómica conformaban la oferta musical del festival. Por ello, siempre que se tuviese amplitud de miras, era posible encontrar siempre algo que ver en el festival.

In total, 4 stages (Main, Lesna, Trojka and Eksperymentalna) together with one mobile stage (new this year) and a tent in the dining area made up the musical offer of the festival. Therefore, if you had an open mind, it was always possible to find something to do or watch at the festival.

El viernes día 7 comenzaba para un servidor con The Stubs en el escenario Lesna. Rock’n’roll en vena por parte de unos jóvenes que proceden de Varsovia. Comenzando con mucha energía y con un guitarra y vocalista gracioso y que conectaba con el publico, hizo que el comienzo fuese perfecto.

On Friday 7th began for me with The Stubs in Lesna stage. Rock’n’roll injected in vein by some young people from Warsaw. From the beginning they start with a lot of energy and with a funny guitar and vocalist that connected with the audience, they made that the start was perfect.

Pinceladas de garage y mucha mala baba empujaban a las canciones como apisonadoras. La verdad es que me gustaría volver a verlos en un concierto completo como cabezas de cartel (tal vez en algún escenario mas pequeño). Grupo a seguir.

Some reminiscence of garage and lot of anger pushed the songs as bulldozers. The truth is that I’d like to see them in a headlining concert (maybe in a smaller stage). Band to look forward.

Tras ellos me acerque a ver a Pablopavo i Ludziki pero no terminaron de conectar conmigo. La union del grupo Ludziki con el cantante Pablopavo tuvo su aceptación entre la gente, pero el calor y el sol dando duro me condujeron a recorrer otras partes del festival.

After them, I went to see Pablopavo i Ludziki but they weren’t my cup of tea. The union of the band Ludziki with the singer Pablopavo had its acceptance among the audience, but the heat and the sun conviced me to visit other parts of the festival.

A continuación me acerque a un grupo de Szczecin llamado Kristen que tocaba en una de las carpas (Eksperimentalna). Música menos comercial y mas contundente que me entretuvo y la verdad es que no solo a mi. Viendo la gente agolpada en la carpa.

Next one was a group of Szczecin called Kristen who played in one of the tents (Eksperimentalna). Less commercial and more stronger music that entertained me and not only me according with the people at the tent.

Decidí que era el momento de ver otro de esos experimentos especiales que realizan en este festival. En esta ocasión se trataba de un grupo llamado Kwadrafonik que tocaban sus pianos de un modo “peculiar” y lo cual era interesante para ver sentado pero la presencia de un cantante recitando poemas que mas parecían fragmentos de una misa no me retuvo, aunque muchos aprovecharon para ver un recital distinto y mas relajado. Siempre hay alguien al que le gusta algo distinto que a ti.

In any case, I decided to move and see one of those special experiments that performed in this festival. This time it was a band called Kwadrafonik playing their pianos in a «peculiar» way and which was interesting to see sitting in the grass but the presence of a singer reciting poems that look more like mass fragments was too dense and too calm for me, but many took this chance to see a different and more relaxed recital. There is always someone who likes something different than you and that’s the point of the festivals.

Un pequeño descanso, y llegaba el momento en el escenario principal de uno de los grupos que triunfaron (a mi entender) en el festival. Songhoy Blues, procedentes de Mali, nos deleitaron con una demostración de como adoptar un estilo musical y al mezclarlo con tus raíces para transformarlo por completo.

A little break, and it was time for the main stage of one of the groups that succeeded (in my opinion) at the festival. Songhoy Blues, from Mali, delighted us with a demonstration of how to adopt a musical style and mix it with your roots to transform it completely.

 

Pensar en el estilo Desert Rock de la Orquesta del Desierto, Yawning Man, Carlton Melton y todos los que nos puedan ocurrir y luego le inyectamos los genes de la música africana y te puedes hacer una idea de lo que nos esperaba.

Think about the style Desert Rock from Orquesta del Desierto, Yawning Man, Carlton Melton and any other band that we can think about and then inject the genes of African music and you can get an idea of what they played.

El que tocasen antes de Santana unos días antes en el festival de Jazz de Montreux nos decía que algo tenían los muchachos.

The fact that they played as support for Santana few days earlier at the Montreux Jazz festival told that they have “something”.

Cantando en su idioma y renunciando al típico ingles, hicieron que el publico lo disfrutase tanto como se les vio disfrutar a ellos (en Ai Tchere Bele se lo pasaron bomba). Fue una autentica gozada de concierto de un grupo que jamas había oído antes. Me encantan los festivales!!!

They sing in their language avoiding the typical English, and they made the audience enjoyed as much as they were (on Ai Tchere Bele they got a good time). It was an absolute joy of concert of a band who had never heard before. I love festivals !!!

Tras ellos, era el momento de acercarse a cenar algo antes de los platos fuertes de la jornada. Comenzaba con la noruega Susanne Sundfør que debe ser una estrella en su país de origen pero que no me entretuvo lo suficiente como para renunciar a ver como preparaban el escenario para Sunn O))).

After them, it was time to get some dinner before the main attractions of the day. It began with the Norwegian singer Susanne Sundfør that happens to be a star in his home country but didn’t  entertained me enough (not my style of music) and decided to be prepared for Sunn O))).

Al igual que yo, viendo los preparativos y la prueba de sonido se encontraban los integrantes del grupo Thaw de los que ya he hablado en otras ocasiones y con los que tuve oportunidad de comentar sus impresiones tras su paso por el Primavera Sound en Barcelona (Hace nada los han confirmado el Inferno Festival, uno de los festivales extremos mas importantes de Europa).

Like me, watching the preparations and the sound check were the members of Thaw of whom I  had already written other times and with whom I had a chance to discuss their impressions after their time at Primavera Sound in Barcelona (not long ago they were confirmed to the Inferno Festival, one of the most important festivals in Europe)

Y es que los siguientes en tocar en el escenario eran los maestros del Drone y que darían para escribir un ensayo por las pasiones y odios que despiertan a partes iguales.

And the reason was that the next band to play on stage were the masters of Drone who can give enough stuff to write an essay about the passions and hatreds which aroused equally.

Yo debo reconocer que no los sigo en profundidad pero si estoy al tanto de muchas de las sorpresas que generan a través de su sello Southern Lord. Por ello, esperaba con impaciencia el concierto de esa noche tras mi experiencia fallida en el Roadburn de 2011.

I must admit I’m not a devoted follower but I am aware of many of the surprises they released through their label Southern Lord. That’s why I awaited vividly the concert that night after my failed experience at Roadburn 2011.

Y debo decir que esta vez me quede mucho mas conforme con la actuación que realizaron. Es cierto que en las caras del publico se vieron alternar las expresiones de incredulidad, admiración, sarcasmo y disgusto con lo que vieron. Pero tan cierto es que no dejan indiferente a nadie.

And I must say that this time they left me much more satisfied with the performance they did. It is true that the faces of the audience were changing between expressions of disbelief, admiration, sarcasm and disgust with what they saw. But as true it is that they leave no one indifferent.

Y mención aparte merece la actuación de Attila Csihar, esa si que no deja indiferente a nadie. Todavía tengo grabado a fuego en la memoria algunos de los gritos en el final de su actuación.

And worth mentioning the performance of Attila Csihar, that if that does not leave anyone indifferent. I can’t get out of my head some of the screams at the end of their performance.

Tras una hora de distorsión, gritos y humo, mucho humo era el momento de ira a ver otro grupo del que no había oído hablar en mi vida pero que parecía ser de culto (para algunos).

After an hour of distortion, screams and smoke, lots of smoke it was the time to go to see another band about I didn’t know before the festival but that seemed to be kind of legendary.

The Residents llegaban para interpretar su disco Shadowland (por lo que creí entender al cantante, su tercera parte) y si salías descolocado de Sunn O))), The Residents acababan de culminar el colocón.

The Residents came to play his album Shadowland (according with what  I understood to the singer, his third part) and if you were founding misplaced after Sunn O))), The Residents managed to increase this feeling .

La verdad es que no tengo palabras para describir lo que vi. Creo que bizarro seria lo que mejor podría definirlo.

The truth is I have no words to describe what I saw. I think it would be “bizarre” the word that better could define it.

Tras ver un rato y con el cansancio acumulado por el calor del día, decidí que era el momento de retirarse para descansar en vista de lo que nos esperaba al día siguiente.

After watching for a while and with the accumulated fatigue due to the heat of the day, I decided it was time to retire to rest before what awaited us next day.
