METALMANIA 2017. La vuelta de la leyenda. The return of the legend.

El día 22 de Abril de 2017 suponía la vuelta de un clásico en los festivales de Europa tras 9 años de ausencia y que siempre había estado en mi radar aunque solo fuese por los distintos conciertos registrados por bandas a las que seguía en el Spodek de Katowice.

The day 22 of April of 2017 implied the return of a classic in the festivales of Europe after 9 years of absence and that always had been in my radar (even if it was only for the concerts recorded by bands at the Spodek of Katowice .

Así que al conocer su vuelta a la actividad este año decidí que tenia que asistir a tan magno evento.

So when I knew about their return to the activity this year I decided that I had to attend to this event.

La selección de bandas había creado algo de polémica por la ausencia de un cabeza de cartel de mucho renombre, pero a mi entender el cartel era muy completo en lo referente a nombres internacionales y lo mismo ocurría con los grupos polacos.

The selection of bands had created some controversy because of the absence of a well-known headliner, but in my opinion the Line up was very complete regarding international bands and the same happened with the Polish bands.

Debo ademas indicar que el precio de la entrada de pista estaba por alrededor de los 40 euros cuando, últimamente, por ese precio se están habituando a darte un grupo grande con un telonero prácticamente desconocido o casi novel.

I should also point out that the price of the ticket was around 40 euros when, lately, at that price we are getting used to see a known band with a medium support band or (even) some novel band.

Así que, para mi, el cartel cumplir plenamente mis expectativas, especialmente Arcturus y Coroner  me parecían bandas muy difíciles de ver salvo en este tipo de festivales un poco mas especiales.

So, for me, the lineup fully meet my expectations, especially Arcturus and Coroner seemed to me bands very difficult to see except in this kind of festivals.

No llegue al principio del festival porque empezando a las 11 de la mañana y con previsión de que terminase a altas horas de la madrugada había que dosificarse. 

I didn’t arrive to reach the beginning of the festival because with 11:00 am as kicking hour and knowing that it would end at further midnight, I had to care..

El edificio donde tenia lugar el festival es en el pabellón Spodek de Katowice, del cual ya había hablado con anterioridad en otras ocasiones y donde se dispusieron 2 escenarios. El escenario principal situado en la pista del pabellón y el escenario pequeño en un lateral de los pasillos que rodean y dan acceso a la pista central. 

The Hall where the festival took place was at Katowice s Spodek, which I had already spoken previously on other reviews and where 2 scenarios were settled. The main stage located on the Main hall and the small stage on one side of the corridors that surround and give access to the Main hall.

El primer grupo que pude ver fue Tygers Of Pan Tang, con un heavy clásico que a las 12:30 de la mañana no consiguió reunir a mucha gente. Y es que en esta edición de retorno hay que señalar que la afluencia de público no fue masiva pero si que permitió una buena entrada (sobre todo a partir de media tarde). 

The first band I could see was Tygers Of Pan Tang, with a classic heavy metal that at 12:30 in the morning failed to gather many people. In this comeback festival the audience wasn’t massive but I was big enough (especially from mid-afternoon) to expect that the festival will grow another time in the future.

El escenario pequeño me dejo un poco descolocado con su situación y en el principio del festival decidí que iba a tomármelo con calma porque a partir de las 17 no habría descanso. 

The small stage left me a little shocked with his emplacement and at the beginning of the festival I decided that I would come back later during the evening.

Por tanto, la siguiente banda que vi fueron los holandeses Sinister. Tras tantos cambios de formación y los cambios de vocalistas, creo que en este momento pasan por una etapa de indiferencia. 

So the next band I saw were the Dutch Sinister. After so many changes of formation and the changes of vocalists, I believe that at this moment they go through a time of indifference from the audience.

Solo los temas más antiguos animaron algo el ambiente. Su actuación pasó sin pena ni gloria y no dejo huella en el público. 

Only the older songs were cherished by the audience, but not so much His performance passed without notice.

El siguiente grupo era una de las bandas que más interés me despertaban a priori. Arcturus es una banda difícil de ver en directo por lo que decidí ver todo su concierto.

The next band was the one that got me curious at first. Arcturus is a difficult band to watch live so I decided to watch the whole concert.

Mi resumen de su actuación es que la banda tocó con muchas ganas (en especial Hellhammer y Sverd) pero no sabría decir si Simon estaba desganado o es su forma de interpretar los temas de Arcturus. Cuando le he visto tocar con Borknagar, la sensación es muy diferente. 

My summary of their performance is that the musicians from the band played well (especially Hellhammer and Sverd) but I could not tell if Simon at vocals was disheartened or this was his way of sing Arcturus songs. When I had seen him play with Borknagar, the feeling was quite a lot different.

Tal vez el hecho de tocar a las 14:40 no le animase especialmente, pero es lo que tienen los Festivales.

Maybe playing at 2:40 p.m. didn’t excite them too much, but that’s going on always at the Festivals.

Una ligera decepción.

A slight disappointment.

La siguiente banda fue Entombed AD y fue garantía de éxito. A cuchillo desde el principio de su tiempo. Alternaron temas nuevos con clásicos y no bajaron el pistón en toda la actuación.

The next band was Entombed AD and their are always a guarantee of success. Taking no prisoners from the beginning of their time on stage. They alternated new songs with some old classics and they didn’t loose their speed during the whole performance.

Son garantía de éxito para un festival. Tenerlos en la lista de bandas de un festival siempre es un placer.

They are a guarantee of success for a festival. Having them on the lineup of a festival is always a pleasure.

Tras ellos, Vader no soltaron el pie del acelerador. Como Peter nos recordó durante la actuación, se cumplen 25 años del lanzamiento de The Ultimate Incantation (como pasa el tiempo, solo un poco menos de mi primera vez en el concierto que dieron en Irún). 

After them, Vader didn’t release the accelerator. As Peter reminded us during the performance, it’s 25 years since they release The Ultimate Incantation (how time goes by, just a little more  han my first chance to see them live on their gig in Irún).

Al igual que Entombed AD, siempre cumplen. No vi todo su concierto porque decidí darle un intento al escenario pequeño y ver a Thaw, pero me gusto mucho lo que vi. Espero poder verles en algún concierto de la gira.

Like Entombed AD, they always do their best. I did not see their whole concert because I decided to give a try to the small stage and see Thaw, but I really liked what I saw. I hope to be able to see them in some concert of the tour.

Thaw dieron un concierto compacto pero el escenario pequeño me dio una sensación de agobio completa. La sensación de su concierto es me han gustado más en otras ocasiones, pero todo estaba influenciado por el entorno.

Thaw gave a compact concert but the small stage somehow collapse me. The feel of their concert was that I have liked it more other times, but everything was influenced by the place.

Partida la visión del escenario por los múltiples pilares, las escaleras de acceso a plantas superiores y demás elementos arquitectónicos, la única opción para ver un concierto con decencia en el escenario pequeño es estar en la primeras filas (con todo el riesgo que conlleva con el violento mosh de los fans polacos). 

The stage vision was blocked by multiple pillars, stairs to access upper floors and other architectural elements, the only option to see a concert with decency in the small stage was to be in the front rows (with all the risk involved with the violent mosh of Polish metalheads).

Así que me fui a ver a Sodom a continuación.

So I decided to see Sodom next.

Estaba claro que tenían mucha gente que esperaba fundamentalmente por este concierto. A mí, de tantas veces que tocaron en España y que los he visto en otros sitios, han llegado a no despertar mi entusiasmo como antes pero debe reconocerse que su arsenal de canciones es jodidamente poderoso.

It was clear that there was a lot of people waiting mainly for this concert. To me, because they had played in Spain so many times that I had seen them in other places, they don’t cause me a lot of  expectation but I had to recognised that their song’s arsenal is pretty amazing.

Pero tampoco vi su actuación al completo porque me acerque a ver la actuación de Obscure Sphinx en el escenario pequeño.

But I also didn’t see all their performance because I came to see the performance of Obscure Sphinx on the small stage.

Y en este caso tengo que decir que, a mi parecer, fue la actuación destacada del festival. La ambientación que consiguen transmitir en sus conciertos es de tal calibre que no se puede explicar en palabras.

And in this case I have to say that, in my opinion, was the highlight of the festival. The atmosphere that they manage to transmit in their concerts is of such caliber that it can not be explained in words.

Mi mayor queja seria que su lugar debía ser el Escenario Principal, pero tal vez no sea posible que lo llevasen a termino del mismo modo. Musicalmente son una amalgama de estilos que culmina la poderosa voz de su cantante pasando del susurro a las voces mas desgarradoras en cuestión de segundos.

My biggest complaint would be that their place should be the Main Stage, but it may not be possible for them to carry it out in the same way. Musically they are an mixture of styles that culminates with the powerful voice of their  singer passing from the whisper to the most heartbreaking voices in a matter of seconds.

Solo he tenido oportunidad de ver a Obscure Sphinx 2 veces en directo y estoy deseando repetir.

I have only had opportunity to see Obscure Sphinx live twice and I am looking forward to repeat.

Llegaba, a mi gusto, el otro grupo del escenario principal que tenia muchas ganas de ver que no era otro que Coroner.

And it came, to my taste, ta band on the main stage who I really wanted to see. There was none other than Coroner.

Tras la ocasión en la que les vi en el Afterburner del Roadburn hace unos años no había tenido oportunidad de repetir y debo decir que me dejaron extasiado. Autentica brutalidad técnica por su parte y uno de los conciertos del día.

After the occasion in which I saw them in the Afterburner of the Roadburn a few years ago I hadn’t chance to repeat and I must say they left me ecstatic. Authentic technical brutality from their part and one of the concerts of the day.

Al publico no lo vi muy animado con ellos pero si concentrados, lo cual no es poco para la cantidad de horas que ya llevábamos allí.

I didn’t see it a lot of joy from the audience, they were more like trying to transcend with them, which it was somehow cool.

Rápidamente había que intentar llegar al escenario pequeño donde tocaban Impaled Nazarene. Fue prácticamente imposible porque la violencia se había desatado en el mosh cerca del escenario así que solo pude certificar que siguen siendo aplicando ese particular rodillo de su mezcla de Punk y Black. 

Then quickly I tried to reach the small stage where it was playing Impaled Nazarene. It was practically impossible because violence had been unleashed in the mosh near the stage so I could only certify that they are still applying their mix of Punk and Black like a panzer.

De vuelta al escenario principal, era el momento de los portugueses Moonspell que también estaban de recordatorio con sus discos Irreligious y Wolfheart. 

Back on the main stage, it was time for the Portuguese Moonspell who were also on remembrance of their Irreligious and Wolfheart records.

Debo decir que su puesta en escena siempre es potente, pero sus canciones no me llegaron tanto en directo como lo hicieron en otras ocasiones. Es como si parte de la fuerza se hubiese perdido. Aun así, Fernando es un gran frontman y su cenit llego con Vampiria que hizo moverse a todo el pabellón.

I must say that their presence on stage is always powerful, but their songs didn’t catch me live as they did on other occasions. It was like part of the punch had been lost. Even so, Fernando is a great frontman and his zenith came with Vampiria that put on rush the entire pavilion.

Mi ultimo cartucho lo reserve para ver a Samael y pude confirmar mis temores respecto a ellos. Nunca he sido seguidor de su estilo y en directo me confirmaron que su mezcla de metal con bases programadas no me llega. 

My last breath kept it to see Samael but I could confirm my fears about them. I have never been a devoted to their records but playing live they confirmed to me that their mixture of metal with programmed bases doesn’t fit well with me. That was my problem, other people was enjoying a lot their concert, so I was happy about them.

Así que en ese momento decidí que acaba para mi esa jornada puesto que a Furia los había podido ser hace no muchas fechas. Fueron más de 12 horas de conciertos que me dejaron un buen sabor de boca y la esperanza de que se vuelva a repetir el festival con más regulairidad.

So at that moment I decided that it ends for me that day because I had been able to see Furia some days ago. It was more than 12 hours of concerts that left me a good taste and I hope that the festival will be repeated again yearly basis.

Con la cantidad de festivales que aparecen a diario, bueno es ver que un clásico de los festivales vuelve y espero que sea para quedarse con nosotros por mucho tiempo.

With the number of festivals appearing daily, it is good to see that a classic festival returns and I hope it will be to stay with us for a long time.

La distribución y el horario planificado de los conciertos se ajustó bastante a la realidad.(cosa de agradecer a la organización)..

The distribution and the schedule of the concerts were quite adjusted to the reality (something to be grateful to the Organisation).
