Mastodon conquering WARSAW

Pues allí estábamos, un 11 de Noviembre de 2017, cuando en Varsovia celebran el día de la Independencia y salen los de una facción y la otra a enfrentarse en las calles. Pues que mejor que pasar de la política y acercarse a oír un concierto de metal de nuevo cuño (o antiguo dependiendo del oyente).

Well, so here I am, on November 11, 2017, when in Warsaw every year the masses celebrate the Independence Day and there are kind of fights and arguments on the streets between the supporters of different politics wings. Well, what better than to pass about policy and take a ride to hear a new metal concert (or old depending on the listener).

Mastodon iniciaban la gira por Europa en la que les acompañaban Red Fang y Russian Circles pero, desgraciadamente en los 3 primeros conciertos no se incorporaban Red Fang lo que restaba empaque al cartel.

Mastodon began their European autumn tour in which they were accompanied by Red Fang and Russian Circles but, unfortunately in the first 2-3 concerts Red Fang wasn’t on the list. Such a shame.

Pero dejando de un lado las quejas y centrándonos en lo musical, el concierto prometía mucho. Sobre todo porque había una parte del concierto de Mastodon muy interesante, pero eso lo contare un poco mas adelante.

But leaving aside the complaints and focusing now just on what we could see, the concert promised a lot. Especially because there was a part of the concert from Mastodon very interesting, but I’ll tell you about that later on.

La velada la iniciaban el trio Russian Circles con su propuesta instrumental de post rock, pero seguramente uno de los mas duros que he visto en directo.

The evening began with Russian Circles, a trio with their instrumental proposal of post rock, but surely one of the hardest I’ve seen live.

A eso se le añadía una puesta en escena sobria y el poco tiempo del que dispusieron para tocar y el concierto se paso volando.

To that was added some dimmed lights on stage and the short time they had to play and the concert flew by.

Muy buenas sensaciones y confirmaron la buena impresión que me dejaron en el Asymmetry Festival hace unos años.

Very good feelings and confirmed the good impression they left me at the Asymmetry Festival a few years ago.

Pero llegaba el momento de una de mis bandas favoritas. Mastodon.

But it was time for one of my favorite bands. Mastodon.

A esta banda la he visto tocar en multitud de ocasiones. Desde en Bilbao con The Haunted en una sala Azkena pequeña en la gira de Leviathan, en Madrid en el Festimad del desastre, así como de teloneros de Tool en la Cubierta de Leganés, pasando por Londres como teloneros de Slayer (y estos tocando el Reign In Blood integro), así como en Munich tocando el Crack The Skye, en la Brixton Academy en la grabación de su album en directo, en el festival Vainstream, o en el Sonisphere de Madrid antes de que Metallica tocasen el Black Album, en Eindhoven dando uno de los mejores conciertos que les he visto dar a nivel vocal y en un par de ocasiones en Varsovia en giras anteriores. Digamos por tanto que me siento con capacidad para valorar un concierto suyo y compararlo con otros anteriores.

I’ve seen this band playing on many occasions. Since long time ago when they played in Bilbao with The Haunted at the small Azkena club in the tour of Leviathan, when they take part in the Madrid festival Festimad (yes, that chaotic one, the most violent I had ever been), as well as opening for Tool in Leganés near Madrid, through London as supporters of Slayer (with Slayer playing the Reign In Blood album), as well as in Munich playing the Crack The Skye album, in the Brixton Academy in the recording of their live album, in the Vainstream festival, or in the Sonisphere in Madrid before Metallica played the Black Album, in Eindhoven giving one of the best concerts I’ve seen them vocally and a couple of times in Warsaw on previous tours. Let’s say that I feel confident about my vision to value a concert of them and compare it with previous ones.

Verlos por decimosegunda ocasión demuestra que a mi no me convence eso de que lo mejor que han hecho es el album Leviathan y desde entonces están acabados.

Seeing them live for the twelfth time, I’m not convinced by the conservative fans saying that the best thing they have done is the album Leviathan and since then they are finished.

No, para mi esta banda sigue demostrando que no están estancados y haciendo el mismo disco una y otra vez. Y no es que precisamente la música de Mastodon se pueda calificar precisamente como comercial (de lo que muchos les tachan).

No, for me this band keeps showing that they are not stocked in the past doing the same album over and over again. And it is not precisely that Mastodon’s music can be described as commercial (of which many are branded). But they always try to evolve in their albums, and this is a good point for me.

No, Mastodon es una banda de mucha categoría que siempre ha tenido un problema en sus actuaciones. Y es que el nivel vocal que demuestran en los discos y las armonías que tienen sus temas son extremadamente complejas y exigentes y al llevarlas al directo, a veces no consiguen que sean melódicamente armónicas.

No, Mastodon is a high class band that has always had a problem in their performances. And the fact is that the vocal level they show in the discs and the harmonies that their songs have are extremely complex and demanding and when taking them to live, sometimes they do not get them to be melodically harmonic.

Por ejemplo, en su anterior concierto en Varsovia, las voces y el conjunto del concierto no fue el mejor (seguramente uno de los peores que he visto suyos, el sonido no consiguió funcionar del todo).

For example, in his previous concert in Warsaw, the voices and the set of the concert was not the best (probably one of the worst I’ve seen his, the sound did not quite work).

Pero esta vez, esto ha sido otra historia amigos míos.

Empezar el concierto con un tema como The Last Baron de mas de 13 minutos y tan complejo dice mucho de lo engrasado que hay que salir a escena. Luego ya el concierto fue intercalando temas de sus distintos disco pero no bajo el tono en ningún momento.

Start the concert with a song like The Last Baron of more than 13 minutes and so complex says a lot about how greasy you have to go on stage. Then already the concert was interspersed themes of their different album but not under the tone at any time.

Por supuesto destacar cuando te tocan temas como Megalodon o Mother Puncher de Leviathan o Remission ese mayor dureza de los inicios se hace notar en comparación con los temas mas actuales, pero sirve de perfecto contraste para dar variedad al repertorio.

Of course highlight when you play songs like Megalodon or Mother Puncher de Leviathan or Remission that greater hardness of the beginning is noted in comparison with the most current issues, but it serves as a perfect contrast to give variety to the repertoire.

Y así van pasando los temas hasta que con Steambreather dejan el escenario y vuelven con la ya anunciada incorporación en directo de Scott Kelly de Neurosis a las voces y guitarras.

And so the songs go by until Steambreather leave the stage and come back with the announced live addition of Scott Kelly of Neurosis to vocals and guitars.

Y en ese momento ya es el apoteosis. Porque empiezan a tocar todos los temas en los que ha colaborado Scott Kelly con ellos en los discos y eso supone un bis de 6 temas absolutamente brutales.

And at that moment it is already the apotheosis. Because they start to play all the songs that Scott Kelly has collaborated with them on the albums and that supposes an encore of 6 absolutely brutal songs.

Tras despedirse el resto de la banda en el ultimo tema, el batería, cantante y pulpo (¿cuántos brazos tiene?) Brann Dailor se acerca a la parte frontal del escenario para agradecer al público de Varsovia. Un fin de fiesta de una banda que puede que no llegue a sustituir a Metallica como algunos predecían pero creo que va a dar mas noches de pasión todavía (al menos a mi).

After saying goodbye to the rest of the band on the last track, the drummer, singer and octopus (how many arms does he have?) Brann Dailor approaches the front of the stage to thank the Warsaw public. A party end of a band that may not come to replace Metallica as some predicted but I think it will give more nights of passion still (at least to me).
