Massivefest en Varsovia. Massivefest in Warsaw

Pues tras haber disfrutado del Off Festival, y para servir de conclusión de la época veraniega se presentaba la ocasión de asistir a un festival en la ciudad de Varsovia en sábado y así dar por finalizados los festivales de este verano.

Having enjoyed the Off Festival, and as the conclusion of the summer season the chance to attend a festival in the city of Warsaw on Saturday and gave as concluded the festivals of this summer was a nice opportunity.

Massivefest era el nombre del festival y  tenía lugar en la sala Progresja (probablemente uno de los mayores clubs de conciertos de Polonia) donde aparte de las barras en el interior se dispuso un expendedor de cerveza en el exterior junto con un pequeño grill para preparar alguna comida y como zona de fumadores.

Massivefest was the festival and it was done in the Progresja Klub (probably one of the biggest clubs for concerts in Poland) where besides bars inside the club there was a dispenser of beer available outside along with a small grill to prepare some food as well as the designed smoking area.

En esta ocasión, cambiábamos de espectro o variedad musical respecto del OFF Festival pues se trataba de un festival centrado en las versiones mas extremas del metal. Cubriendo el Thrash, Death, Brutal Death y Black con los grupos que tocaban, se trataba de aprovechar el comienzo de la gira de Nile y Suffocation junto con los grupos teloneros y completado con 3 grupos polacos y una banda internacional que completaba un lineup muy potente.

On this occasion, we change completely the musical variety regarding with what I saw at the OFF Festival because it was a festival centered in the most extreme versions of metal. Covering Thrash, Death, Brutal Death and Black by the bands which played in the festival, it was settled on the basis of the tour that Nile and Suffocation were starting tighter with their support bands and filling the lineup with 3 Polish groups and a powerful international band.

No tuve ocasión de llegar a ver al primer grupo que comenzaba a las 16 horas pero conseguí ver algunos temas del siguiente grupo Truth Corroded. Los australianos consiguieron que la gente se motivase para comenzar a moverse y disfrutar. La audiencia de público todavía no era muy elevada y pude observar a muchos de ellos tomando algo antes de entrar en la sala (dado las altas temperaturas que nos acompañaban)

I hadn’t chance to arrive and see the first group starting at 16 hours but I manage to see some items from the next band called group Truth Corroded. The Australians gave reasons to people that started rushing with the concerts and enjoy. The audience was not very high yet and I could see many people were getting a drink before they get into the festival (given the high temperatures that accompanied us).

La banda, tocaba un Thrash Metal con toques Death o una versión actual del estilo, contundencia, técnica y brutalidad en su justa medida que aceleraba el pulso y te ponía en órbita.

The band, playing a Thrash Metal with some Death touches or kind of modern current version of the style, with technic and brutality in a way that could get you in the good mood.

Tras ellos tocaban los polacos Saratan. Algunos problemas técnicos alargaron la preparación de sus instrumentos y provocó que su tiempo en escena se viera reducido.

After them the polish Saratan were the next to play. Some technical problems delayed their set and caused that their time on the stage time was shortened.

Como el grupo comentó, los efectos programados que les acompañaban parecían no funcionar y realizaron su actuación sin ellos. Ello provocó que la actuación se basase solo en su valía en directo y debo decir que fueron efectivos. La banda se entregó al máximo y un estilo un poco diferente al resto de la velada hizo que fueran uno de los grupos que tenían que ganarse al público.

As the group said, the programed parts that accompanying them seemed not to work and they had to make their concert without the effects. This caused that all the performance was supported only by their live abilities and I must say that they were effective. The band gave it all and being from a bit different style that the rest of the evening made them one of the groups that had to fight to get the attention from the audience.

Con vocalista femenino y masculino y basados solo en guitarra, bajo y batería se ganaron seguramente unos cuantos fans entre los más abiertos de mente.

With male and female vocals and based only on guitar, bass and drums, they surely won some fans among the most open-minded metalheads.

A continuación era el turno de uno de los pilares del Brutal Death: Suffocation. Tras varias idas y venidas de componentes parece que la banda se ha asentado últimamente con la incorporación de Kevin Talley a la batería. En la voces era notable la ausencia de Frank Mullen, pero parece que en los últimos tiempos solo en ocasiones puntuales su trabajo le permite tocar en directo.

Then it was the turn of one of the pillars of Brutal Death: Suffocation. After several comings and goings of components it seems that the band has settled recently with the addition of Kevin Talley on drums. In the voices was a notable absence of Frank Mullen, but it seems that in recent times only on special occasions your job allows you to play live.

He de decir que su sustituto Ricky Myers no lo hizo nada mal, pero el carisma del señor Mullen es muy difícil de suplir.

I must say that his replacement Ricky Myers perform quite excellent, but the charisma of Mr. Mullen are boots difficult to fill.

Y que decir del repertorio, fueron pasando por temas de muchos de sus discos de los cuales la gente se volvió loca cada vez que tocaban los más antiguos.

And what about the setlist, they were passing through many of his albums and people got nuts every time they played some of the oldest song.

Por otro lado, los solos del señor Terrance Hobbs sigue dejándonos anonadados por la complejidad y lo intrincado de los temas. He de decir que la banda estuvo muy solvente y llego y arrasó, no dejaron nada en la reserva.

On the other hand, Mr. Terrance Hobbs solos still left us overwhelmed by the complexity and intricacy of them. I have to say that the band was very solvent and came and annihilate, left nothing for the next day.

Tras la primera descarga de Brutal Death, era el turno de la segunda con Nile.

After the first shot of Brutal Death, it was the turn of the second one with Nile.

Otra salvajada de concierto con el señor Karl Sanders y Dallas Toler-Wade secundados por un brutal George Kollas en la batería y un bajista que cambiaba del que había tocado con ellos en las últimas ocasiones que les había visto.

Another savage concert with Mr. Karl Sanders and Dallas Toler-Wade seconded by a brutal George Kollas on drums and a bassist player that changed from who had played in recent times that I had seen them before.

Un comienzo brutal que culminaba en su tercer tema con el ya clásico Kafir! Empezaba a demostrarnos hasta que nivel puede llevar la brutalidad de su música. Aprovecharon también para presentar algunos temas de su nuevo disco recién salido del horno como Evil to Cast Out Evil.

A brutal start that culminated in its third song with the classic Kafir! It showed to what level can be reach with the brutality of their music. They also took the chance to present some songs from his new album just out of the oven as it was Evil to Cast Out Evil.

Como siempre, el final quedaba reservado para Black Seeds Of Vengeance descargando la furia desatada en esa canción. Como único punto negativo, señalar que vi al público mucho menos entregado que en Suffocation pero seguramente el groove de las canciones es completamente distinto, lo que no ayuda.

As always, the end of the setlist was reserved for Black Seeds Of Vengeance unleashing all the final fury in that song. As the only negative point, noted that I see the audience much less overexcited that at Suffocation but surely the groove of the songs is completely different, which makes the difference.

En cualquier caso, gran concierto de una banda que veo mucho más abierta y participativa con el público comparado con la primera vez que les vi en la sala Tunk en la gira de In The Darkened Shrines.

In any case, great concert of a band that I see much more open and social with the people compared to the first time I saw them in the Tunk club during the In The Darkened Shrines tour.

A continuación era el turno de los maestro polacos Vader y con motivo de la pirotecnia que tenían en escena fue imposible realizar fotos desde cerca.

Then it was time for the Polish masters Vader and because of the pyrotechnics that they had on stage it was limited the chance to take close up photos.

Desde luego, un comienzo con Wings del álbum Litany te ponía a agitar la cabeza desde el primer momento. Seguiría un recorrido por el que pasaron clásicos como Carnal del álbum Black To The Blind o Silent Empire del Ultímate Incantation y con un final un poco extraño para mi gusto: terminar con una versión del tema Black Sabbath (recordando el disco de versiones Future Of The Past) prolongada por un tema que no reconocí mas bien festivo con el que terminaron disparando pirotecnia desde sus guitarras.

Of course, beginning with Wings from the album Litany put you to shake your head from the start. Follow a journey in which passed classics like Carnal from Black To The Blind album or Silent Empire from Ultimate Incantation and they finished with a slightly strange end for my taste: finish with a cover of Black Sabbath (remembering the cover from album Future Of The past) extended by a song rather festive that I did not recognize ended with fireworks from their guitars.

Con la cantidad de temas propios (y clásicos) de los que dispone Vader, incluir una versión (por mucho que sea una tan cambiada como la que ellos interpretan) no es de mi gusto. Aunque he de reconocer que visto la respuesta del público debía ser el único que tenía esa opinión. Yo hubiera preferido mas canciones de los propios Vader pero probablemente ellos no y ese fue el final del concierto.

With the amount of own songs (and classics as well) that it has Vader, include a cover (even it so changed as they played) is not my favorite way to end. Although I must admit that the public response showed that maybe I was the only one with that opinion. I would have preferred more songs of Vader but probably they don’t and that was the end of the concert.

En cualquier caso, no dejaré de ver a Vader cada vez que tenga ocasión. Sin duda una de las mejores bandas que ha dado Polonia en este género.

In any case, I will certainly try to see Vader whenever I have chance. Undoubtedly one of the best bands that Poland has in this genre.

Una vez finalizado el concierto de Vader, llegaba el momento de tomar el camino de vuelta y abandonar el festival. Pese a quedar todavía la actuación de Marduk, el cansancio del día y que no había muchos lugares donde sentarse (salvo que encontrase un lugar seco en el suelo tras varias horas de festival) me decidió a partir y tomarme un merecido descanso tras varias horas de metal y un buen paseo durante el día por Varsovia.

Once finished Vader concert, it was time to take the way back and leave the festival. Although still left to be done the performance by Marduk, the fatigue of the day and there were not many places to sit (unless you found a dry spot on the floor after several hours of festival) I decided to leave and take a rest after several hours of metal and a good walk during the day at Warsaw.

En general, una buena propuesta para realizar un festival en una sala cerrada pero con limitaciones en las posibilidades para ofrecer algún servicio adicional para tantas horas en un recinto cerrado. La propuesta de las bandas que conformaban el cartel me pareció muy acertada y por ello debo felicitar a la organización. Espero que se repita en más ocasiones.

Overall, a good proposal for a festival in a closed club but with limited possibilities to provide additional services for so many hours. The selection of bands that made the bill of the festival seemed very successful to me and therefore I congratulate the organization. I hope that it will be repeated more times.
