Kristonfest 2018

Este año se me presentó la ocasión en el último momento de asistir nuevamente al Kristonfest en Madrid y con el increíble cartel con el que nos deleitaba nuevamente, era casi un deber porque conseguía juntar lo más granado del rock, el sludge, el stoner y el doom de la actualidad lo que me llenó de satisfacción con la posibilidad de asistir al mismo.

This year I had the opportunity at the last moment to attend the Kristonfest in Madrid again and with the incredible lineup that delighted us again, it was almost a must, because they gather some of the most revered bands of the rock, the sludge, the stoner and the doom scene which filled me with satisfaction that I was able to attend.

Así que, no quedaba otra que buscar un vuelo que encajase en el presupuesto y una vez aterrizado, y tras gestionar un par de temas personales en Madrid, ya estaba dispuesto para poder disfrutar del concierto con tranquilidad.

So, there was no other way neither than find a flight that fit the budget and once landed, and after managing a couple of personal issues in Madrid, I was ready to enjoy the concert with tranquility.

Una de las curiosidades de este festival es que otorga a los grupos la posibilidad de tocar sus setlist completos, lo que hace de este festival un rara Avis dentro de lo que es la norma en este mundillo.

One of the curiosities of this festival is that it gives the bands the ability to play their full setlist, which makes this festival an outsider within what is the norm in this world.

Y otra que hace también especial este festival es que el publico tiene la posibilidad de decidir el orden en que van a tocar los grupos y, normalmente, debo decir que aplican un criterio bastante lógico y con respeto a los grupos.

And another thing that makes this festival special is that the audience has the possibility to decide the order in which the bands are going to play and, normally, I must say that they apply a fairly logical criteria and showing some kind of. respect to them.

Otro punto, que puede extrañar a alguien de fuera de España es la hora de comienzo del festival pero es algo que ocurre con mucha frecuencia allí (recuerdo los tiempos en que en la sala Tunk de Irún organizaban conciertos los viernes y sábados que comenzaban a las 23 horas con 4 o 5 grupos incluso !!!)

Another point, which may surprise someone from outside of Spain, is the start time of the festival but it’s something that happens very often there (I remember the times when the Tunk club in Irún organized concerts on Fridays and Saturdays that started at 23 hours with 4 or 5 groups even !!!)

CONAN

Así, era el momento de Conan a las 20 para abrir el festival con su poderosa descarga de Doom monolítico.

So, it was Conan’s time at 20 to open the festival with their powerful monolithic Doom.

La última vez que tuve la ocasión de verlos fue en el extinto festival Asymmetry en Wroclaw y en el club Poglos en Varsovia y en cierto modo, tenía curiosidad por ver si habían sufrido algún cambio en su formación.

The last times that I had the chance to see them it was in the extinct Asymmetry festival in Wroclaw and at the Poglos club in Warsaw and I was curious to see if they had undergone any change in their lineup.

En todas las ocasiones que les he visto han dado actuaciones absolutamente brutales y estaba también muy expectante por ver cual era el resultado con el sonido en la sala Riviera (que es uno de los puntos muchas veces criticado en esta sala, aunque yo recuerdo haber visto a The Mars Volta y Queens Of The Stone Age y no tener ninguna pega sobre el sonido).

In all the occasions that I have seen them live they have given absolutely brutal performances with overwhelming and massive sound and I was also very expectant to see what was the result with the sound in the Riviera club (which is one of the points often criticized in this club, although I remember seeing The Mars Volta and Queens Of The Stone Age and not having any issue about the sound, but this was loooooong time ago).

Por tanto, un comienzo tan denso a las 8 de la tarde nos cargaría las pilas para el resto de la jornada.

Therefore, such a heavy start at 8 o’clock in the afternoon would charge us the batteries for the rest of the day.

Así que justo de tiempo llegue directo para el comienzo con Conan con un cambio en la batería respecto a la formación con la que les vi en Varsovia, con las voces mas profundas de su bajista apoyando a las principales de su guitarrista Jon Davis.

So just in time I arrived to the beginning of the performance from Conan with a change in their drummer with respect to the band that I saw in Warsaw, with the deepest voices of their bassist supporting the main ones from guitarist Jon Davis.

Una actuación monolítica que nos permitió comprobar como de grueso podia ser el sonido de la sala en la en que todo momento sonaron compactos y perfectamente compenetrados.

A monolithic performance that allowed us to see how thick could be the sound of La Riviera because they managed to sound compact and perfectly blended.

A continuación era el momento de Elder, un grupo que a nivel técnico siempre me ha dejado impresionado por su calidad y, el anterior fin de semana en Varsovia había completado un gran concierto.

Then it was the moment of Elder, a band that at a technical level has always left me impressed by its quality and, the previous weekend in Warsaw had completed a great concert.

Comenzaban de nuevo con Sanctuary de su ultimo LP que durante sus 10 minutos nos trasladó a  distintos mundos oníricos con sus solos y fragmentos instrumentales. Algún pequeño malentendido con la gente de seguridad en el foso nos hizo perder algún tiempo para realizar las fotos, pero esto no tuvo otro efecto.

They started again with Sanctuary of their last LP that during its 10 minutes moved us to different dream worlds with their solos & instrumental passages. Some small misunderstanding with the security people in the pit made us lose some time to take the photos, but with no other side effects.

Lo que si que estuvo mucho mejor fue la calidad de las voces por parte de Nick Di Salvo que estuvieron a un nivel muy superior a lo que vi en el Red Smoke Festival. Las armonías vocales fueron mucho mas homogéneas y estuvieron mas entonadas. Tal vez, en aquella ocasión fue un pequeño desliz.

Regarding the quality of the voices by Nick Di Salvo I must said that were at a level far higher than what I saw them in the Red Smoke Festival in Pleszew. The vocal harmonies were much more homogeneous and were more tuned on their tone. Maybe, on that occasion his throat had a bad day.

En general debo decir que el concierto fue memorable y Elder seguirán manteniéndose dentro de los grupos que están en continua rotación en mi música más escuchada.

In general I must say that the concert was memorable and Elder will continue to stay within the groups that are constantly rotating in my most listened music.

Y el tercer grupo de la tarde era el momento para otra apisonadora sonora como son los High On Fire, una de las bandas mas demoledoras y corrosivas en directo.

And the third band in the evening was the time for another rollercoaster such as High On Fire, one of the most devastating and corrosive live bands on this genre.

Tuvieron una manera de comenzar muy curiosa su concierto con una pieza instrumental como es Sons Of Thunder de su album Blessed Black Wings. Lo que si hicieron fue tocarla en directo y no meterla desde la mesa de mezclas como suelen hacer ahora la mayoría de los grupos.

They had a very curious way to start their concert with an instrumental piece like Sons Of Thunder from their album Blessed Black Wings. What they did was to play it live and not put it from the desk as most bands now do.

A partir de ahi Matt Pike y sus muchachos no dejaron títere con cabeza y empezaron a soltar riff tras riff a cada cual mas pesado. Mención especial merece su batería Des Kensel que eleva de manera demoledora la potencia del grupo.

From there Matt Pike and company delivered us a tasty portion of abraive music and began to release riff after riff each heavier than before. Special mention deserves their drummer Des Kensel that raises the power of the band to the stratosphere.

Su repertorio fue recorriendo su discográfica pero llegando a Blessed Black Wings como su referencia más antigua.

Their repertoire went through their discography with Blessed Black Wings as their oldest reference for this nigh.

Finalizaron con Snakes For The Divine y fue curioso oír a Matt Pike quejarse por el humo de gente fumando aprovechando que estaban entre la gente. Cuando menos me provoco una sonrisa maliciosa.

They ended with Snakes For The Divine and it was funny to hear Matt Pike complain about people smoking while they were among the audience. At least this got me a malicious smile thinking about their old times.

High On Fire

Podemos señalar a la siguiente banda como la clara cabeza de cartel para este año, Monster Magnet.

We can point to the next band as the clear headliner for this year, Monster Magnet.

Estando despierto desde primera hora de la mañana empezaba a ser difícil aguantar en pie tantas horas pero el concierto de Monster Magnet supuso para mi un chute de adrenalina como pocas veces recuerdo en mis experiencias musicales en vivo.

Being awake early in the morning it was difficult to stand up for hours, but the Monster Magnet concert was an adrenaline rush for me as I rarely remember in my live musical experiences.

Comenzado con Dopes To Infinity y siguiendo con 3 temas de Mindfucker, fueron posteriormente incluyendo temas de otros discos que se iban salpicando con mas temas de Mindfucker (hasta hacer un total de 5 temas nuevos).

They started with Dopes To Infinity and continuing with 3 songs from Mindfucker, and they were later including songs from other records that were splashed with more Mindfucker songs (up to a total of 5 new ones).

Por supuesto, no faltaron Space Lord o Powertrip y también hubo temas menos esperados por mi como Radiation Day. Para muchos tal vez End Of Time no fuese una gran elección, pero yo la tengo entre mis favoritas de Last Patrol.

Of course, there was no shortage of Space Lord or Powertrip and there were also less expected songs for me as Radiation Day. For many maybe when they play End Of Time was not a great choice, but I have it among my favorites of Last Patrol.

Tras un concierto de alrededor de 75 minutos, puedo decir que todo el cansancio y el viaje ya merecía mucho la pena por poder ver a Monster Magnet.

After a concert of around 75 minutes, I can say that all the fatigue and the exhausting trip was already very worthwhile just to see Monster Magnet.

Y por último teníamos la ocasión de ver a Church Of Misery, los japoneses con sus canciones sobre Serial Killers a los que les tocó la difícil papeleta de terminar la jornada bien entrada la madrugada.

And finally we had the opportunity to see Church Of Misery, the Japanese with their songs about Serial Killers to which they had the difficult role to finish the day well after midnight.

Me resultaba curioso ver como podría resultar ver a los japoneses a tan altas horas de la madrugada (su concierto empezó entorno a las 2 y media de la madrugada) pero no supuso ningún problema para ellos ni para mi.

I was curious to see how the Japanese’s would deal with an hour so late at night (their concert started around 2:30) but it was not a problem for them and neither for me.

Un concierto dinámico, con temas de varios discos, y que me permitió ver a la nueva formación de Church Of Misery porque desde la última vez que los vi en el difunto Days Of The Ceremony en Varsovia.

A dynamic concert, with songs going back and forward their discograph, and that allowed me to see the new members of Church Of Miser from the last time I saw them in the last Days Of The Ceremony in Warsaw.

Tal vez su formación es un poco mas joven y menos carismática que en otras ocasiones (especialmente en lo que se refiere a su vocalista) pero fue muy contundente a nivel musical.

Maybe now the band is a bit younger and less charismatic than on other occasions (especially in regard to their vocalist) but it was very strong on the musical level.

Y debo reconocer que tras su concierto llegue a quedarme un rato en la after party pero eso ya debo agradecérselo a Pumba con el que termine hablando de lo divino y lo humano.

And I must admit that after their concert I even stay for a little while in the after party but that I must thank Pumba with whom I end the night talking about old memories and new challenges.

Después de todo, era el momento de dejarme caer sobre alguna medio de transporte público que me llevase hasta el aeropuerto y continuar mi viaje de vuelta a Varsovia, con el cansancio acumulado de todo el día pero feliz de haber presenciado tan magno evento.

After all, it was time to drop on some transport that would take me to the airport and continue my trip back to Warsaw, with the accumulated fatigue of the whole day but happy to have witnessed such a great event.
