High On Fire en Cracovia

Hoy voy a hablar de un concierto que tuvo ocasión de presenciar hace no mucho y que tenia como estrella principal a una banda americana que no es muy conocida por el gran publico pero que tiene una solida trayectoria a sus espaldas.

Today I will talk about a concert that I had the opportunity to see not long ago and it had as main star a band that is not the most known but they have a solid career behind them and a devote audience.

Pero antes de hablar de las estrellas de la noche, comencemos con los que les calentaron el ambiente.

But before we talk about the headliners, let’s start with the bands that warmed the place before them.

Como en otras ocasiones, el concierto tenia lugar en la sala Fabryka de Kraków y estaba organizado por Knock Out Productions, una de las promotoras que mas y mejores cosas trae en Polonia en lo referente al Rock y el Metal (y no solo).

Similar to other times, the concert took place in Kraków at the Fabryka Club and it was organized by Knock Out Productions, a promoter that brings more and better tours to Poland connected with rock and metal (but not only).

Para comenzar la velada, nada mejor que un grupo polaco de los que llevan demostrando hace tiempo que son un valor seguro. Se trataba de Major Kong con su Stoner instrumental de alto octanaje.

To begin the evening, nothing better than a Polish band that is proving long time ago that they are a safe bet. It was Major Kong with its high octane instrumental Stoner.

Solamente guitarra, bajo y batería, pero quien necesita mas si los que están en el escenario saben que es lo que están haciendo. Montones de grupos conocemos que han seguido esa formula tanto entre los clásicos como en la actualidad dando lugar a la manida etiqueta de Power Trio.

Only guitar, bass and drums, but who needs more if who are on stage know what they are doing and how to do it. We know lots of bands who follow this band structure both among classics bands as well as present bands to the quite used label of Power Trio.

Tuvieron la papeleta de sustituir a Black Tusk, quienes anunciaron que no participarían en la gira a pocos días de su comienzo y la verdad es que no notamos su falta.

They had the difficult task to replace Black Tusk, who announced they would not take part in the tour a few days before it begins and the truth is we did n’t notice their absence.

Tras media hora que se hizo muy corta, un breve cambio de los instrumentos y era el turno del telonero que acompañaba a High On Fire durante toda la gira, se trataba de Bask, un grupo procedente de Carolina del Norte.

After half hour which was very short, a brief change of the instruments and it was time for the support that had accompanied High On Fire throughout the tour; it was Bask, a band from North Carolina in the USA.

Su propuesta fue muy diferente de lo que se podría esperar para este tipo de veladas y es que, aunque tenían sus momentos de contundencia, era casi mas destacable las atmósferas melodicas que incluso me recordaban a Band Of Horses. Seguramente una de las clasificaciones mas extrañas que he realizado pero que reflejaban las mezclas de estilos que permite el metal para la gente abierta de mente.

Their proposal was very different from what you might expect for such metal evening it is that, although they had their really strong passages, it was almost more remarkable the melodic atmospheres that even reminded me Band Of Horses. Surely one of the strangest classifications I’ve done but, at the same time, reflecting the mixtures of styles that allows metal and rock  for open minded people.

La verdad es que el grupo en sus 40-45 minutos de los que dispuso estoy seguro que convenció a mas de uno de la validez de su propuesta. Conmigo si que lo hicieron.

The truth is that the group in their 40-45 minutes that decided’m sure he persuaded more than one of the validity of its proposal. Me if they did.

Muy buen concierto, y nos iba quedando las sensación de que estábamos en uno de esos concierto en los que sabes que valen lo que has pagado por la entrada.

Very good show, and we would leaving the feeling that we were in one of those concert where you know you are worth what you paid for entry.

Y tras el consabido “aclarado” del escenario para el grupo principal, llegaba el momento de High On Fire. Encabezados por Matt Pike (también presente en los revitalizados Sleep) junto con Jeff Matz (en su momento en Zeke y creo que Troy Sanders de Mastodon y el deben compartir el mismo barbero) y Des Kensel  comenzaron la tormenta de metal que nos cayo encima.

And after the usual «cleaning» of the stage for the headliner, it was time for High On Fire. Led by Matt Pike (from the cult band and not long time ago revitalized Sleep) along with Jeff Matz (previously member of Zeke and , probably, client of the same barber that Troy Sanders of Mastodon) and Des Kensel began the storm of metal that rain over us .

Como una autentica apisonadora comenzaron con The Black Plot del ultimo disco Luminiferous y la avalancha de metal no paro hasta el final del concierto.

As a real steamroller began with The Black Plot form their latest album Luminiferous and the avalanche of metal didn’t stop until the end of the concert.

Haciendo un recorrido por sus discos (aunque fundamentalmente en su ultimo disco del que tocaron 7 temas) , en algunas ocasiones fueron incluyendo algunos temas ligeramente mas caldeados porque la avalancha era de dimensiones épicas.

Making a review of their albums (although fundamentally based on their last disc of which they played 7 songs), from time to time they included some songs slightly slower  because the riff avalanche was of epic proportions.

Respecto al sonido, creo que es necesario hacer una mención al respecto. En su momento tuve la ocasión de ver a Sleep tocando en el Roadburn Festival y creo que no he visto tocar a alguien a tal volumen (seguramente lo mas cercano ha sido Ministry). Pues bien, el volumen en esta ocasión no fue tan alto pero puedo asegurar que fue de los más elevados que he presenciado en la sala Fabryka.

Regarding the sound, I think it’s necessary to make a mention about it. Sometime ago I had the chance to see Sleep playing live at Roadburn Festival and I think I have not seen other band play a such high volume (probably the closest he has been Ministry). Well, this time the volume was not as high but I can assure you it was the highest I’ve seen in Fabryka Club.

El cierre fue absolutamente brutal con Snakes For The Divine y con Matt Pike golpeándonos por ultima vez con un solo tras otro. Como había dicho con anterioridad, no es necesario mas que un trio para arrasar completamente en el concierto.

The final track was absolutely brutal with Snakes For The Divine and Matt Pike beat us for last time with one solo after another. As I said earlier, it’s enough with a well trained trio to perform in such magical way .

Una lastima para los organizadores que el lleno no fuese absoluto aunque si que hubo una buena entrada. Conciertos como este no pasan cada día por al lado de casa psique hay que asistir cuando pasan.

A shame for the organizers that all was not full although there was a good entry. Concerts like this do not happen every day next to psyche home when they go there to attend.
