Llegaba el comienzo del calor a la ciudad de Cracovia con 30 grados al sol en el mes de Junio, así que era una buena opción acercarse a una sala cerrada para juntarse con cientos de fans metaleros a sudar la gota gorda en un concierto. Y para mantener la línea, una sesión de sauna para acabar la noche con la ropa empapada. Este es el resumen final de lo que fue una velada fantástica de metal.

Arrived the beginning of the heat to the city of Krakow with 30 degrees in the sun, so it was a good choice to approach a closed club and join hundreds of metal fans to sweat blood at a concert. And to keep in shape, a sauna to finish the night with wet clothes. This is the final summary of what was a fantastic evening of metal.

Aprovechando que al día siguiente era festivo con motivo del Corpus Christi en Polonia, era buen momento para la comunidad metálica de Polonia para acercarse a ver a uno de los grupos que conformaron los pilares del Thrash Metal, junto el Big Four (los cuatro grandes Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer y Anthrax). Son muchos los que incluirían dentro de este grupo a los citados Testament, junto con Overkill y Exodus, pero la fama y el éxito no se reparte siempre de acuerdo al talento y muchas veces esa pizca de suerte condiciona el futuro de las formaciones musicales.

Taking advantage that next day was free due to Corpus Christi in Poland, it was a good time for the metal community in Poland to come to see one of the groups that formed the pillars of Thrash Metal, together with the Big Four (Metallica , Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax). Many people within this group would include the aforementioned Testament, along with Overkill and Exodus, but fame and success is not always distributed according to the talent of the band and many times that bit of luck determines the future of musical groups.

Junto con Testament, la velada la completaba un grupo polaco clásico del cual no había tenido referencias con anterioridad pero que todos los medios los nombraban con el representante genuino del Thrash en Polonia.

Along with Testament, the evening was completed with a classic polish group which I had no prior references but all media appointed to them as the genuine representative of Thrash in Poland.

La verdad es que lo primero que llamaba la atención, centrándonos en el concierto que nos atañe, es que a la batería le falto poco para estar montada en el foso de los fotógrafos; y digo bien porque, ante la falta de espacio en el escenario, el cantante de Virgin Snatch optó en varias canciones por cantar desde el foso así como desde medio del pogo entre el público.

The truth is that the first thing that attracted attention, focusing on the concert that concerns us, is that the drum kit has lacks little to be settled in the pit of photographers, and I say right because of the lack of space on stage, the Virgin Snatch singer chose to sing several songs from the pit and even between the audience.

Me llamó mucho la atención la escasa iluminación con la que se les obligo a tocar. Supongo que fue impuesto por los propios Testament, no creo que fuese necesario hacer tocar prácticamente sin luces al grupo telonero para revalorizar la actuación de Testament. Para mi no tuvo ninguna justificación.

I was much struck with the poor lighting Virgin Snatch were forced to play. I guess that was imposed by Testament, but I don’t think it was necessary to force them to play with almost no lights to revalue the performance of Testament. For me this had no justification.

Sin dejarse influenciar por este hecho, el grupo dio todo en el escenario (y fuera de él, como ya he anticipado). Unos 40 minutos con puntualidad exquisita y en ese tiempo el listado de temas (de acuerdo a lo apuntado en sus hojas) que interpretaron fue el siguiente:

Uninfluenced by this fact, the group gave everything on stage (and off it, as I anticipated). About 40 minutes with exquisite punctuality and in that time the list of played songs (according to that indicated in their setlist sheet) was as follows:

Muy buen grupo de Thrash Metal que dejó al público preparado para darlo todo en lo que quedaba de noche.

Very good group of Thrash Metal that left the audience ready to give everything in the rest of the night.

Tocaba desmontar todo sin tiempo que perder para seguir ajustándose al horario programado. Sobre unos soportes laterales se encontraban un par de elementos decorativos desde los que proyectar algunas luces adicionales junto con algunos efectos de humo.

It was the time to dismantle with no time to spare to continue adjusting to the schedule. On both side were set a pair of stands with decorative elements from which project some additional lights along with some smoke effects.

Comenzaba el concierto de Testament con puntualidad a las 20:15 y se presentaban a escena con la formación que se ha estabilizado estos últimos años tras la baja de Greg Christian al bajo. La base rítmica la conforman Steve Di Giorgio (Sadus, Death, Iced Earth, etc..) al bajo y Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Death, Strapping Young Lad, etc.) a la batería. Junto a ellos el núcleo duro de Testament: Chuck Billy a las voces y Eric Peterson a la guitarra junto con el regreso hace ya unos años de Alex Skolnick (tras el paso de James Murphy en el fantástico álbum The Gathering o en Low).

Testament concert began promptly at 20:15 and presented on stage with the formation that has stabilized in recent years after Greg Christian left on bass role. The rhythmic base is formed by Steve Di Giorgio (Sadus, Death, Iced Earth, etc ..) on bass and Gene Hoglan (Dark Angel, Death, Strapping Young Lad, etc.) on drums. Along with them, the core of Testament Chuck Billy on vocals and Eric Peterson on guitar along with the return a few years ago Alex Skolnick (after the time of James Murphy in the fantastic album The Gathering or in Low).

Por tanto, una formación en la que el nivel técnico esta a un nivel estratosférico (Mr. Skolnick dedica sus ratos libres a sus proyectos de jazz fusión y Mr. Di Giorgio ha demostrado su maestría en el manejo del bajo fretless allí donde ha tocado) la expectativas estaban establecidas en las cotas mas altas. Como aspecto curioso del concierto, Steve Di Giorgio utilizó un bajo fretless de 3 cuerdas, un claro mensaje de “menos es más” en un mundo musical cada vez mas poblado de bajos de 5 y 6 cuerdas.

Therefore, a group that in the technical level is at a stratospheric level (Mr. Skolnick devotes his spare time to his jazz fusion projects and Mr. Di Giorgio has demonstrated his mastery on the fretless bass wherever he played) the expectations were established in the higher levels. A curious aspect of the concert, Steve Di Giorgio used a 3-string fretless bass, a clear message of «less is more» in a musical world increasingly populated of 5 and 6 strings basses.

Y cuando comienzan el concierto tocando Over The Wall, ya se te caen los pantalones al suelo. El publico se vuelve, literalmente, loco y el pogo a tus espaldas se convierte en un remolino de brutales dimensiones.

And when they start he concert playing Over The Wall, you drop your pants down. The audience becomes literally crazy and the pogo behind your back becomes a swirl of brutal dimensions.

Tras este primer golpe de KO, llega el momento para 2 temas de su muy recomendable ultimo disco, siendo los elegidos “Rise Up” y “Native Blood” que, a estas alturas de la película, ya son clásicos dentro de su repertorio.

After this first punch for KO, it’s time for 2 songs from his latest and highly recommended album, being the chosen «Rise Up» and «Native Blood» that nowadays are just new classics between their songs.

A partir de ese momento, el concierto es una descarga de un éxito tras otro de los cuales solo “Eerie Inhabitants” nos da una ligera tregua en la velocidad en torno a la mitad del concierto.

From that moment, the concert is a discharge of one hit after another of which only «Eerie Inhabitants» gives us a slight rest in the speed around half of the concert.

Tras el momento de pausa, de nuevo descargas sin un segundo de descanso hasta llegar a “Practice What You Preach”. Pequeño amago de retirada y vuelta a escena con los 3 últimos temas de la noche que culminan una velada fantástica de metal de la vieja escuela, directo a la yugular.

After the small break, another time increase the speed and, without time to rest they reach «Practice What You Preach”. Small pause and return to scene with the last 3 songs of the night, culminating a fantastic evening of old school metal, as a big farewell.
